Hey all, I am looking invest in my first CLS to help process the plants that my neighbors and I are able to produce legally each year in our state. We’ve had some great fun open blasting on a folding table in the middle of a field but looking to tighten things up a bit both safety and cost wise.
In my research there seems to be two popular configurations of low end closed loop systems:
Spool based
These are the entry level BVV/Bhogart systems that are popular among hobbyists. These seem to universally support a single extraction column of varying width based on top vs bottom fill.
Horizontal pressure tank (ASME)
These seem to universally support two or more extraction columns, usually skinny top fills based on my observations.
Are there any inherent differences between either of these types of systems worth considering? We’d be looking for something with inline dewax and nitrogen assist either way. Both types of systems to be within reach if you are willing to spend up to 2k second hand.
BHOgart wanted to take advantage of the increased surface area of laying the jacketed vessel on it’s side, but more bottom surface area also means more retained oil in your vessel. It all comes down to how many lbs you want to process in a given period.
This hit on something I hadn’t noticed before. All of those second hand horizontal tanks seem to be jacketed. I think that alone puts this style of system out of reach for me. At least, in my head an inline dewax and refrigerant recovery pump and a condensing coil is about as far as I’m willing to go at this point.
Don’t get me wrong, a neighbor grew an 8lb plant last year and stuffing it into a single batch would have been nice.
Appreciate the links. It seems the horizontal design was intended to increase surface area as others have mentioned but the terpenator guy thinks that the reduction of surface area as the liquid level drop makes this moot.
Seems like not being able to pop the top of the spool off would also be an inconvenience. I donno, not seeing any great reasons to go horizontal esp at hobby scale.
@Bill-bro.Dabbins OT but my usertag on my first canna forum was something like JRR Tokin
