i bought some parts of a whole pig- they gave me the face/jowl nut it had an eye too. it was half the face, grossed me out. its from italy though- doesnt that mean its special/ it wasnt fancy pork but do they do aging prosciutto to lame factory pigs?
I thought the pigs in italy roam free and eat tree nuts.
Love Parma prosciutto ![]()
I tried to send an aged Serrano Ham home from Spain. It got confiscated.
The guy who took that probably had a great dinner that night
I like prosciutto cotto. The dry aged one is too salty for me.
Picking up 2 kune kunes this weekend to raise in our goat pastures. I have Heard the do well together. Getting them now so that they will be ready to butcher next fall (at least thatās the goal).
Still plan to do the red wattles next spring as our main ābaconā pigs, but stoked to get these goin (and canāt wait for the lard).
Will post some pics once I get them.
My buddy picked a couple up 5 years ago saying the same. They are now his pets.
Hahahaha I have heard that before actually. I have lard on my mind, they will be lucky to make it past next July-Augustā¦
I love nothing more than frying some corn tortillas up in lard for tacosā¦so good, making my mouth water rn lol
How much?
Like the cost? I paid 100 each. Prices around here are usually 200-400.
The guy also sells red wattle x kune kunes, going to get one of those from his next litter actually. Seemed like a solid breeder
Great price
So small update. After thinking about this more Iām actually going to keep these two females for my breeding stock. I picked the noticeably larger ones from the 7 females he had, and I feel itās just too good of a an opportunity to pass up. I just found a registered double wattle kune kune boar that Iām going to pick up. These ones escaped becoming lard, but their babies wonātā¦
Excited for the boar, get my pick out of the 4 males they have currently. Going to pick him up at 3 today.
This will put them ready to breed this coming spring (thinking April), so we can have a couple litters of piglets at the end of next summer.
Still planning to do red wattles too. But getting going on these right now just made sense. With the amount of pasture and scraps (house, garden and fruit from my families and neighbors trees) we are able to give them, our input price will be basically nothing. Itās really cool to see them pasture with the goats and chickens. They seem to eat a lot of the stuff that the goats donāt seem to like.
Why buy clones when you can cut them yourself ? Good thinking.
For how much pork I wanna be eating (and currently already eat lol), it just didnāt make sense. Especially with 3 kune kunes not really costing me shit to keep aliveā¦
If I had to buy alfalfa, and didnāt have pastures it would be a different story.
The guy I talked to said his first litter they had were between 6-7 piglets per sow. Second is between 8-10. Based on those numbers, I will be pretty set. We can sustain around 24 pigs with the current set up (obviously need more waters and dig a few small wallows). But Iām expanding soon as well, into the more forested area too, so leaves me some room to grow.
Last update, getting two males, and will pick the best of the 2 for our breeding boar. Lesser of the two will be lard and sausage
is a good idea to worm them 3 times a year.
they pick up worms rooting around.
Nice pigs!
They worked faster than I anticipatedā¦
I like the decision, some of the offspring will be ready for the pit next summer. They taste so good.
