Were currently playing with different medias in the sightglass section to better understand how to get a proper chromatography style flow. Ima be trying UV lighting next to try and better see the fractions as they come down. So far were seeing some interesting stuff
Has anybody else noticed when you this stuff the first part of the run that goes through the powders doesnāt look like anything is happening, but once you get going the output gets nice and clear?
Iām in the middle of a run now, and Iām wondering if wetting would be beneficial?

I plan on doing a side by side of crx, b80, w1, and one more powder or combo thereof. I have aa, t41, w2, w3, etc. Any thoughts on the 4th run anyone?
We donāt recommend a pre-wetting it because you have to maintain a temperature of -10 or below, or you risk expanding the media, which opens up pores that could potentially trap oil. Our media works best running in line, right after the extraction vessel at cold temperatures. The other reason is more simple; thereās just no need to. Youāre adding extra steps. Our media is ready to run.
Might be good to put a warning on the bag for the -10c ideal temp required. Even though the majority of people run in that range or lower. Id say there is a good part of the hydrocarbon community that runs a bit warmer than that. And especially when running crude.
Just a suggestion so people have the most relevant information so people donāt burn you down for media not doing what itās suppose to
Its because the media isnāt wetted, until the media is fully saturated the vast majority of surface area of media isnāt exposed to your solvent containing the extract so it canāt do its work but can still trickle through.
If youāre doing small runs this can be a problem and its best to wet your media, as per the retailerās recommendation flood with cold solvent prior to introducing solvent coming out the material column.
Dooood!! You hit the nail on the head. It took lots feedback and people having issues before we figured this out. Had my few remaining brain cells really stressed out until we finally figured it out. But yes - with that comes an updated SOP (just released btw) that calls out the temps.
I temporarily stalled in the crc with the crx media like I normally would to prevent channeling, then slowly pushed on at a feed rate of 1lb/30-40 seconds. This prevented it from rocketing through, which I also witnessed
We have a guy thatās recommending filling the column with solvent first, and then pushing it down and out with solvated oil. Granted thatās out media, but seems like a good idea. The results looked great.

Just reporting what one guy did to prevent channeling. When he showed me the results it looked great⦠so Iām taking a neutral stance at this point.
Itās been hard to nail down a universal SOP because lots of folks have been running our media in different systems and setups.
