Beef femurs will not wear their teeth out, raw or cooked. Best chew toy available for large dogs.
I don’t do raw, but I do make cooked food for my lab. My cattle dog is still 9 months so I’m sticking to puppy kibble now for the traces and micros.
This is a mix of chicken breast, beef liver, rice, oats, and some veggies for roughage. That’s roughly one week worth. I’ve gotten his weight down from 125 to about 110 since switching from kibble.
Raw bones and frozen raw bones from beef can actually keep dogs teeth very clean of plaque. When I harvest elk I keep the whole femur, scapula and and any other bones I feel like carrying back and my dog completely eats them over a few days each when I give them to her.
When we harvest goats our dogs get every last bone on them. Lol. Same with deer, except for last season because blue tongue was running ramped.
My 7 year old husky/pit mutt has been on raw meaty bones her entire life. Raw chicken bones do not splinter.
She’s a big fan of hunting season, when I let her have free reign of the discard piles that buildup on the county road near the driveway.
She’s eaten her fair share of raw salmon carcass and cooked chicken bones as well, which always concerns me, but it’s never affected her negatively
Do ya make broth with the bones first?
If you ever make a wish on the wishbone it’s easy to see how soft chicken bones are. If you debone a raw chicken and pull it out, it’s pretty rubbery. But a cooked one is easy to crack in two, hence the splintering.
I did lose a cat to a chicken bone when I was a kid tho
No, i just bone them out, grind most of it, save the back straps and the rest goes to the pooches.
I cubed the last goat I did and used it for instapot curry, was fantastic
That sounds delicious. Need to give That a try. Forgot, we also keep the goat goat shoulders for birria. It has quickly become one of my faves.
I give my dog short shank portions and she gets all the marrow out and keeps chewing but i take it away once its clean.
i use a powders from a company called pup sup. Its all the micros you mentioned that are on the ass of the label of dog food. But i feed raw for the food part. Glänzen Canine. i put that stuff in with yogurt and eggs. I do give her junk food like a piece of pizza
Why take it away?
She gets enough bone off the chicken and it seems to me shell wear her teeth out. Her poo already is a white ball. i let her chew a bone for a day. Shes strange- super healthy but almost never ever evver drinks water. To me bones arent a food its a chew treat.
You need to get that checked bro
its the bones, its always been that way… Shes 9 years old and like a puppy. The vets description of her is “exuberant” She was just swinging on a rope hanging off the ground. She likes showing off like that/
Only time any of my dogs have shit white was after eating the stuffing out of a toy.
you said you dont feed raw chicken though. the bones get digested into little calcium balls. She doesnt poo logs, little white balls. She gets almost all the water she needs out the raw meat. I can lead a dog to water but not make her drink it unless i add ipa.
My dogs still lay down some major logs lol
