I was trying to point out the cooking analogy sounding wording of yours. Reflux temperature is reflux temperature even though you sometimes see the word vigorously used for what you describe.

With your skills I know you could either do chromatography to remediate it, chloranil to oxidize the d9 into cbn or some other crazy shit I’ve probably never thought of

On a small scale hcl in gaseous form is still best D8 yields on heptane
Biggest issue I have encountered is the gaseous hcl buying in bulk for it has many issues on the Dutch bm making it $
