Apparently rosin is chemically extracted

I think there are few chemists with experience in other industries, but I feel like there are a bunch of people like me, who have a chemistry degree, but jumped straight into a cannabis lab, which definitely doesnt require a degree in chemistry to operate.

Chemistry degrees are definitely helpful in understanding the whole process, and especially helpful in trouble shooting, but a lot of the things I learned in undergrad arent really useful for cannabis.

I have no degrees and only claim to be an amateur when I talk about my knowledge personally. I took a year of science in high school that was chemistry/ochem/biochem and that’s all the formal learning I did. I do like to read and experiment a lot on my own (and company) time.

I’m lucky that in cannabis you don’t need a degree as much as you do in other laboratory fields. I would totally get one too expect for the fact that G_Boe mentioned: most of the knowledge gained in pursuit of this degree is not particularly useful in my (planned) future endeavours.

Oh and I agree with most here: while there are chemical solvents in the trichomes that may aid in extraction during a rosin press, I would not call that a chemical extraction.

I said the same line about the gas station yesterday haha. If you won’t dab diamonds because of solvents stay away from gas stations!

fixed that for you.

LOL, truth!

Double fixed

So why are there soooo many ā€œchemistā€ in cannabis??

There are many autodidact chemists in cannabis. But not so much when referring to chemists with advanced degrees as a percent of the whole.

And I have heard from more than a few groups who won’t hire chemists or any degreed scientist for any high-level position without previous industry experience. University experience doesn’t always (or typically) translate to the cannabis industry without a few bumps (learning curves) along the way.

This had me cracking up. I have a bachelor of science in chemistry, worked in big pharma for several years working with injectable drugs. Then went to cannabis for a few years, and then back to pharma except this time it was biotech working with therapeutic nucleic acids that are undergoing some clinical evaluation to treat what were previously untreatable conditions. I was the only non-PhD on the therapeutic nucleic acid team for a while, and being around so many intensely smart, driven people was humbling, especially after a few years of cannabis.

Not one person on that team cared about clout, social media posts or bragged about thier ā€œlab skillsā€ lmao. They were true grinders, putting in hours in the lab, presenting to clients, creating reports and trying to solve problems in chemistry. And they knew so damn much about chemistry, it was impressive and kinda scary. I definitely felt waaaay more challenged than I ever did in cannabis lol, and having to present your work to directors and senior scientists both within and external to the company was nerve wracking but rewarding. It was the type of environment where if you were wrong, you’d be called out for it in those calls. Some of those clients could be brutal on those calls.

You really had to be prepared and know what the fuck you’re talking about, because the people on the other end of that call were paying hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars for you to develop a process to manufacture their nucleic acid sequence. One of the projects I worked on, just 20 grams of final custom RNA product cost the client about 100k alone. That’s not including the analytics and pilot production in GMP environment. Definitely a world apart from the few years I spent in cannabis. Now when I see ā€œcannabis chemistsā€ in lab coats on social media posting about hash oil, I chuckle. Like, it’s kinda cute playing ā€œimitation scientistā€ lmao.

In retrospect, I am grateful I was able to work in pharma before going into cannabis. It showed me how a global, multibillion dollar company works, how regulations work, and what role the FDA actually plays. Coming into cannabis, Ive heard so much non-sense and bullshit from people who’ve never stepped foot in a regulated industry (other than cannabis), it just makes me more grateful for the experience I was able to get. I feel if I went straight into cannabis, I wouldn’t have been able to advance in my career.

My PhD advisor’s PhD advisor (academic grandpa) was short listed for a Nobel at one point and was the editor of the premiere journal in his discipline. I understand full well about being around insanely intelligent people who never bragged about their insane accomplishments.

There is a reason I don’t claim to be an ā€œextractor, or solventless guru.ā€

Lmfao even though without question I could teach many, that doesn’t prevent me from recognizing those still trying to be professional teachers, far below the available teaching spectrum…

There is plenty of room for all to keep learning.

Therefore, in hopes to further inure myself with the common trolls of the board, I would like to condescend by e x t e n d i n g my warmest asshole remarks…

The correct term for materials that easily undergo combustion is ā€œinflammableā€ā€¦ stemming from their ability to succumb to rapid self-propagating oxidation reactions that release visible high-temperature ion plasmas… Id est, ā€œinflamedā€ or cloaked ā€œin flameā€ā€¦ like instruct, but not infallible. :smirk:

Ooh! Me too! As a male of short stature, small genitals, hairy toes and other pet insecurities—obviously somehow traumatic enough to make me lash out online anonymously so that the intensity of my shame will mold my mental homunculus into a True ā€œTrollā€ (and maintain that form) most befitting of this persona by which I garner my precious human attention—I, TOO, work tirelessly at flexing my menial comprehension of nomenclature (as well as grammar, syntax, spelling and other minutiae of written language) because it divides people, thereby perversely satiating my sense of control! Who are YOU to contradict all those esteemed internet scientists here on Future-420 (s.i.c. ā€˜cause I know  ) who provide the REAL public education (AKA recalcitrance, Biatch!) by boldy arguing semantics with @Sidco_Cat @BigM_2 and all the others "reppin’ The Man" trying to sell us medusa mystery poison gas, dubiously dry dirt for your CRV, and microtoxins in your shroom fungi reefers with fake Kindle-Buds?! :japanese_goblin:
