Also, figured I’d mention it, I had a few questions, so I called up USALab. The guy, Connor, who answered was very helpful, and very knowledgeful. I’m glad I made the decision to buy from them, instead of buying on Alibaba. I took that advice from a few of you folks, so thanks to you as well!
From a fellow newb to another, it’s looking good so far man!
Wish everclear was legal here and I could just run up and get a couple bottles. Probably going to have to use usalabs denatured ethanol with heptane.
There should be a little gasket in the cap of the thermometer adapter.
Gasket is very nessesary !!
Make sure you get your hands on a decent vacuum pump 8cfm 2 stage
Watch for the Lets of that table collapsing if all weight is in the middel
Plenty of space you have
Thanks @Roguelab , I have the table secured to the wall studs as well as the legs. The brackets are underneath against the wall. Hoping this works. I put my fat ass up on it and it held, hoping I’ll be good. But I’m with you, to have something like a table collapse destroy everything would totally suck!
@nocarrier also thanks for the feedback. I tore the packaging apart looking for the gasket. I wound up calling, and they are sending me out one. I have time, so no big deal.
Other than that gasket, the kit arrived flawless, very well packed. I was expected something to be broken, but not.
Getting there… Need to get some water line and vacuum line to hook it up. I’d like to test the vacuum soon, well ahead of my vacation week at the end of the month.
Pvc braided hose for Vacuum
Cheap and works well once dirty yust change
What did you plan on using to heat up the condensor?
I’m building a little 500ml setup myself currently. Thanks for sharing, I enjoy seeing others setups and ideas.
Before I answer that, I’ll say this. Not sure who the originator of the quote is, but my rule #1 with most things is “Success is on the far side of failure”. I think it was the founder of IBM, or similar. Anyway, its worked well for me for a long time.
Rule #2, Transparency.
I screwed up and bought a “heat bath” that was just that. You put stuff in the top, and it heats it up. As I was taking everything out of the boxes and thinking through how everything connects, I quickly got that “You Dumbass” feeling in my stomach.
I’m back to figuring out what to get. Now that I know the mistake, I’m going to spend this evening researching.
Embarrassing mistake, but whatevs. Refer to rule #1
USA Labs sent me two broken heating mantles in a row and wouldn’t replace the second one. I still have them, broken. A client bought a turnkey kit from them and it came with a cracked boiling flask and was missing a cow. Took a couple weeks to get those replaced for him. I’ll never do business with them again.
Sorry to hear that man. My experience with them so far has been Groovy!
I’m glad you had good luck with them! Just sharing what I experienced.
self sarcasm is a virteu
The setup you have in glasswear has a cow so you won t be dooing any hot condensor tech
With this glaswear a hot water submersible pump or a solar heating system pump will work safe till 90C
As for tubing automotive heat resistant tubing works great till 130C rated
This is if the hot bath you have has a thermostat
A sousvide is also an option for the starter
Hey @cyclopath what connector do you use to hook your DV-41 up to your SPD?
Thanks a bunch! Just tested the Supervac I have with the DV-41. With the gauge connected to only the pump, its reading 30 microns. Should be good enough to start out with. We’ll see where it lands once connected to the glass. Still need vacuum hose.
what vacuum?
Its a Yellow Jacket Supervac. Its a 6cfm pump that I had access too. I also have a welch, but figured I start with the supervac and then upgrade to a better pump if things seem doable.
Welch 2552 for rotovap
Trivac 25e and 2021i for spd
I dont buy turn-key (lol) units.
2021 good for both?
I have an older Welch 2585 I’ve been using for everything.
Can anyone tell me? What’s the disadvantage of decarbing in the BF just before doing an SPD pass?
None really
Under vacuum would be nice
But dooing that in a bf is asking for trouble a vac oven is the better option
