Trying to make tinctures. What is the best way to actually mix CBD oil (winterized) with MCT and get accurate amounts of CBD (mg/mL)? The viscosity of the CBD obviously makes it tough. Thanks in advance.
edit: Formulations are simple math. I’m trying to figure out more of an SOP approach to actually manufacture tinctures efficiently.
Stoichiometry is your friend. You would have learned about this in High School Chemistry class or any General Chemistry class at any community college or University. You need to convert %Cannabinoids to mg/g cannabinoids and dilute with MCT to desired concentration based on weight because the testing is based on weight not volume. This applies to any formulation.
I understand this. I guess I did not phrase the question with 100% clarity. The math is simple… I’m just trying to figure out the best way to move desired amounts of CBD oil into MCT oil in order to create batches of specific concentrations…
Heat and stirring. Most of us use a magnetic hotplate but a commercial blender works well (especially when creating liquid gels with various emulsifiers, etc). double boiler, homogenizer, whisk, etc. Once you heat the CBD and MCT enough they will mix perfectly.
If you’re doing an all oil based tincture then you can be done there but if you’re trying to make a homogenized, stable emulsion then there will be a lot more involved
Thanks for the info! Is water soluble truly as important as these brands make it out to be? I understand CBD being hydrophobic and the human body being mostly water, but trying to figure out if we need to go the water soluble route…
I only extract and use non-homophobic CBD so it might be different for me but I there may be some advantage to water soluble. Hydrophobic is what you’re thinking
I think a base using a bit of ethanol then oil and water is the winner
If you’re at the stage of fingering out how to make a solid MCT tincture then don’t worry about making it water soluble. Cool trick and lots of use/potential but nail down the classics first.
Try out a couple recipes. Your 55% almost makes easy math so take 4 grams and then make 8 total bottles of tincture. 4 can be made with CBD & MCT only and the other 4 can be made with a touch of ethanol, your CBD and MCT and water. Keeping the CBD dissolved is the trick and using a little MCT to keep it fluid helps (you see how hard it is to work with cold).
I always like you use a little “insurance” when using anything with water. Gum arabic is a great, easy emulsifier if you go that route. It’s the same thing I told my ex-wife - you just have to play with it and figure it out
I’m trying to finger it out. Have done some small batches and looking at mixing 1:1 with MCT in a water bath while mixing ( after I warm up CBD and MCT with a little foreplay)
That would be great to help it be more fluid but if you’re making an oil based tincture it will be way, way more MCT : CBD in order to keep your 500mg / 60ml (I think that’s what you proposed originally?)
