The bar industry is better than the cannabis industry; prove me wrong

Thanks for reminding me why you need to be hidden. Bye child.

What crawled up your vagina and died

I had to work 20 hours a week but for me it was 10/10 research/teaching. My 10 teaching was teaching labs and I had second semester intro to programming lab so my students were eager and pretty chill. I didn’t usually hit 10 hours … for research , I was obsessed so I hit way more than 10 but that was my life.

Looking back , that was a stressful time. I’m not trying to brag but I barely work 20 real hours a week nowadays so it paid itself back

It all depends on what your research is. I did live cell experiments that had to be monitored and lasted 12-14 hours.

Typically you only have to teach the first year… unless your advisor has no grant money. Then you’re screwed.

Not sure what you’re getting at with that but based on your research topic , I can imagine what your job prospects look like versus mine :stuck_out_tongue:

That is certainly something that’s scary for people who are considering getting a doctorate. There are several things that are very discouraging from a practical standpoint. The ‘overhaul’ rate for technology and techniques in many fields at this point is 5-8 yrs (see any post from 2018 in this forum). This means the stuff you go in for could be irrelevant by the time you’re done or even midway through, plus super specialized is usually the opposite of lean, which seems to be what is required these days. Add in the pay cut you take and unless you want to stay in academia, it’s really unappealing in general for an ounce of clout.

Been trying to figure out how to do a PhD on my own, but have been too busy working on taking care of my families these last few years to pursue it. I know of people who have done it, seems like a challenge, but I suppose that’s the point.

What is seriously fucked up is that the only re-training program for PhD’s (the post-doc) is totally funded by grants that don’t apply to anyone more than 5 years post graduation.

Technically all you have to do is find someone to accept your thesis/dissertation, but universities are businesses now and they don’t make money that way.

We’ll, where money fails, clout prevails. Let’s see if I can crack mass graphene production or that electrons don’t exist or whatever

It’s simple really, one industry has kept up with inflation (able to charge more), the other is being decimated by inflation+unregulated alternatives.

Honestly, unless you are a hardcore academic with a pedigree from a top 20 institution and publications in journals with impact factors over 20, you’re better off with a MS.

Odds are you’ll be well equipped to teach yourself new skills and not overqualified because every employer thinks you will jump for the next better opportunity.

Unless you wanna teach when you retire like me. :joy::rofl::joy:

You can teach with an MS in lots of places. Tenure track positions are few and far between. Almost everything is adjunct oriented.

Don’t wanna teach for tenure. I’d just like to teach some business courses when I get a little older and have a little spare time.

I could teach at a high school level with my education but any university near here requires at least enrolled in a phd program to be even considered to teach.

I’d assume for a business class an MBA plus real world experience would be just as valuable.

Just wait. In another 10 years all you need is PowerPoint skills and a HS diploma.

Got it and agree that a lot off the labor that is tedious and hard is in the lower bracket of pay
Guess your workers should get a field trip to marocco and see the labor for 10$ a DAY
Year in year out and almost 0 in covid years

Aburn huh? Its beautiful and green there. Took a trip up there some years back to pick up my wifes cousin. I love that place.

I don’t know if I should get out too. Feeling tired and frustrated. The market is changing and going down too quickly

I entered this industry because I feel it is related to what I learned. But maybe I made a mistake… life is so dark…
