Listen man, I know it’s hard. I’m not going to go into my situation but believe me, I know. Just try to keep your head up because confidence and attitude is everything.
I will. I’m just doing what I can how I I can and where I can
Thank you guys for the insights.
I’ve been looking into alternative job search sites and came across one called inclusively.com that has a goal of hiring diverse teams of people for their clients, disability or not. Maybe give that a shot if you’re looking for a career and not just a job. I know I’m gonna try it out.
Saw some other people suggesting govt. work by applying thru usajobs.com, but I think govt jobs will be very very very difficult for folks like us to pursue. (assuming we smoke a ton of bud) also super competitive.
Saw another person recommend looking into paid apprenticeships, which aren’t only available to just the trades but also tech/IT and cybersec as well. Apparently we can just search apprenticeship/training with the job field were interested in on LinkedIn to begin a search. And ApprenticeshipsUSA should be another site to look at.
Apparently temp recruiters can put you in office jobs/wfh jobs that can eventually become permanent.
I’m gonna give these a shot because I want a career, not just a job. Might come back and update this comment if I see anymore interesting suggestions. Sorry if this is all over the place.
Edit: your local govt should also have a disability/rehab services that can help you find gainful employment. I’m still on the fence about disclosing disabilities to any employer, I can’t trust any company not to discriminate. But there oughtta be some understanding people out there right?
Maybe time to think big picture for some people and drop the pot. I know USPS is desperate for workers, they get disability coverage and all sorts of great benefits.
Hahaha, bro ngl, I’m honestly scared to quit. I know I had my last seizure in 2019, but I literally have not stopped smoking a single day. You’re right though, it really is holding me back from A LOT of potential opportunities. I’ve considered quitting so many times, and actually I may have to after today because I’m on my last nug of this auto I grew. I’m not sure what to do in that case because I don’t have insurance, and the preventative seizure medication never really worked for me anyway.
Try keto since you already spend money on food it can be considered free in a sense. It helped my friend but it might be tricky to stick with because you can’t eat carbs or sugar. But on the plus side you can eat mad bacon with a good excuse
I had an employee with epilepsy I let him smoke weed while working it created quite the work environment and hate on me from other employees lol. I told him as long as he did his work I didn’t care. I also let him come in at whatever time he wanted because of the sleep issues, again as long as he got his shit done and done well. And he did. He was not on keto and every so often he would miss a full week of work. The next 2 weeks he had to make the missed days up
I’ll definitely look into that, thank you. I also have a pretty bad migraine disorder, the doctors tried to tackle both the seizures and migraines with the same preventative medication, I think it was topamax. They saw the issues as inherently tied to each other, though my migraine issue has been a problem since I was a kid.
I also probably have an eating disorder, but doctors always just say it’s a fast metabolism. I’ve always been super skinny and lightweight, so maybe this’ll help me eat more and maintain a healthier diet hahaha. I remember being on seroquel as a teen, it made me a zombie, but I was able to eat a full full plate each meal, 3 times a day, and actually gained a lot of weight that way.
I’m not tryna be annoying and go off listing a plethora of problems, but I just don’t get to talk about this often so it’s a bit cathartic. Once again, thank you for the idea, I’m going to look into diets for sure. Can’t keep using bud as a crutch.
all I have to say, is many car dealerships will work with people even if they only work 25 hours a week and have a 600 credit score. you should be able to atleast get a semi reliable cheap economy car that isn’t a complete POS. that’s stuff we all went through many many years ago when you’re in your 20s. sometimes you gotta look inward to solve your problems.
if you attempt to drive a cheap , broken POS in a job that literally relies on the car to be able to work- it’s gonna break and not perform correctly because you aren’t using the correct tool for your situation.
For the OP and others in this thread who have legitimate disabilities , this doesn’t apply to them obviously because they cannot work for a good legit reason. Your buddy just sounds like he’s kinda irresponsible and created his own problems
bro if you have no job and no income medicaid is free. and all the other govt assistance programs . you just gotta fill out some papers
I have epilepsy. Its 100% controlled now, but in the past it wasn’t, and losing my license for 6 months was awful for keeping my life on track - I had to drop out for a semester of school and quit my part time job. I understand the struggle.
My first piece of advice is not to listen to the advice of strangers on a weed forum when it comes to your health (myself included). Even talking to other epileptics can be misleading, as every case of epilepsy is unique. What works for my temporal lobe epilepsy might be awful for your condition for example. Find a doctor you can trust, and only make changes to your routine with his supervision.
I used to be on Keppra. I hated it. Instead of seeing my doctor and asking for his help I stopped taking it cold turkey and tried to substitute it with just smoking weed. The withdrawal effect caused the worst seizure I’ve ever had. Once I stabilized I was able to switch to a medication that I tolerate, under my doctor’s supervision.
As far as your career goes, you need to find out why you arent able to hold a job, and work on those characteristics. It may be related to a medication’s side effect, or something you can change. For example Keppra was causing me to have bouts of anger, which I was totally oblivious to - that’s certainly something which makes holding a job difficult. Other meds might make you slow, or make your memory bad. You may not be able to change that, but if you can identify the issue, you can develp techniques to manage it.
As far as your career goes, what are your best skills? What type of work do you enjoy? For me it took me a while to realize my path, but once I had my condition under control I was able to pursue a degree in engineering. While in school I worked shitty retail jobs, sales jobs, and eventually worked in project engineering and management.
If I could go back in time I would have spent that time in retail learning to weld, learning PLC programming, and working as a plant mechanic while in school.
That was a bit long, but I really do sympathize with your situation. I’m sure you’ll pull through it.
I quite using cannabis and it’s been a real game changer for me. I always thought it helped with my anxiety and adhd, but after stopping i realized it was quite the opposite. There are times on my weekends where it sounds nice tbh, but at this point I have just pushed through those moments. Might smoke occasionally one day but right now I’m seeing how long I can push myself. It’s been between 4-5 months now.
I have really noticed I have a lot more confidence and less self doubt. More sure of my decisions and way more able to buckle down and just get shit done. I feel I always done my job well but now I have really dialed my shit in. My production is up and I feel customer satisfaction is at am all time high.
I know it may help some medical conditions but I would highly recommend atleast trying to quit and see what it can do for you. The first maybe momth is the worst, after that imo things only get better.
This is coming from a guy who smoked daily from the ages of 16-30.
If I can get back on medicaid without enrolling in SSI, that’d be awesome. I refuse to get back on disability payments because of how restrictive it all is. Definitely going to look into this too, I’ll admit I haven’t been proactive on searching for insurance as I’ve grown complacent with my method of medication hahaha.
you don’t need to be formally disabled and on ssi… it’s based on your income ratio
This is where I’m having trouble. I was 2nd flute chairman in an advanced youth orchestra, I can work with computers, (hardware and software/cyber security basics, just need to refresh myself), I had my own janitorial business in San Bernardino County, a family food business with my mother, and of course I’ve helped with large grows and helped run labs and managed my own small labs, and would resell popular every day items like many others do. So I’m still trying to find what I wanna do forever because the cannabis industry just ain’t the same any more. I really wanted to help medically ill patients but greed got into it and all we can do is make our own little circle and move along.
Medicaid eventually refused to fund further treatment and he went forward despite that fact and funded his own treatment. That ended with him in remission and absolutely no equity plus a sizeable blemish on his credit which will probably not disappear anytime soon due to further complications.
Im surprised that you would say that he got himself in this situation. Your real life experience that you referenced earlier sounds like it hasn’t involved much real life dude.
Okay, so I just learned that GA is one of the states that doesn’t extend its Medicaid program to the unemployed. WA for example does allow unemployed folks to enroll in Medicaid, GA not so much. You have to be working a certain amount of hours, enrolled in school, in job training, etc. which y’know sounds fair, but in reality is extremely restrictive for people in rural areas with a clear lack of viable work. I think this settles it, I should just go back to college lol money isn’t even real and I’ll be working my whole life anyway, what’s a little debt gonna do.
I don’t think random online courses for certs or volunteering with the family business count as training or employment. Hahaha
It’d be ideal if I could work as a student in the library or admissions though. I’d love that.
I apologize. I’m basically handicapped myself without giving details . and guess even tell myself it’s still just my mindset and lack of action that actually holds me back, and I assumed incorrectly about your friend.
damn!!! that is totally not the case in my state. I’m sorry I gave you incorrect advice for your area. But, that library type work sounds super chill as long as it’s the type of work you can do everyday for years. It really sucks you can’t drive because delivery is super easy and you can get lucky as heck on a rainy/snowy/holi day and make over 20/hr at times. The money isn’t crazy but the ratio of work required for it is super low , so it’s perfect, but not for you unfortunately.
What about getting a job on a farm maybe since your area is rural? or did you say physical work was out of the question. I’m sure some down to earth farmer would totally be down to hear you out , but maybe i’m being too optimistic
