Becoming a car salesman has zero barrier to entry (at least for most manufacturers/dealerships) and if you commit yourself to it, you can earn a great living.
Delivery apps will ultimately destroy your car. If you lack the skillset and the tools to do work on your own car then I gotta recommend that you avoid those apps like the plague.
I know someone who was in this position that you find yourself in. They grinded with the delivery/rideshare apps and went through 3 cars in a 3 year timeframe. They now work driving an Amazon delivery van and last I heard they were happy with that gig. It pays $20 an hour, you wouldn’t be driving your own car into the ground, and it’s got a very flexible schedule to the point that you can call in sick with extreme frequency and you’ll still feel secure that you have a job waiting for you when you recover from your most recent seizure.
Search indeed or ziprecruiter for 'Amazon DSP driver"…its a non-CDL gig, no special license required
Tell me about it.
Best bet is to run 2 or 3 different food delivery apps at the same time. Even better if you have any other deliveries to make at the same time too.
Food gets cold occasionally but you don’t get paid to wait for the food to be made so you might as well overlap. If you eat more than 7-8% of the deliveries you will be banned. Also I second the car wear and tear, not factoring in how much city driving will take a toll on your vehicle is a huge mistake.
I can’t drive. My license is revoked.
But I am open to the options and have applied to many
hmmm, very odd. i think you have your car data messed up. no light duty food delivery is gonna ruin a car in 3 years, that’s just ridiculous statement…its just light city driving, what the car was literally designed to handle on a daily basis in the first place.
i did my share of delivering, nothing but oil change every 3-4k miles. and it just keeps going (like most cars that arent POS already) its the easiest job you can find besides a cashier. and as long as you at least half decently maintain it it will last easily 150k miles…there’s also good reasons car warranties exist, for these exact situations, bumper to bumper up till 60k … forget about it for years.
cars are made to drive and be abused a little. you have your thoughts in the wrong place if you drive like a grandma IMO…as long as you dont neglect the crap out of them, they will survive perfectly fine unless you drive a 1k shitbox with ebay parts.
have you ever tried just walking in to a temp agency? they are set up to help pair people with generally crappy but do-able jobs. interview is almost not even a factor, and you can sometimes pick from like 3-4 diff jobs they got. be aware most will be physical and in crappy conditions though…ive done it many times , like just for a month at each job, rack up a band or 2 and move to another crap job. it sucks but it works for some that can’t work traditionally or have struggles/ bad record/ etc
edit: only bad thing is, the temp agency takes a cut out of your hourly pay rate for basically getting you in the door …so another thing you can do is just go there, figure out the names of the companies that are hiring, then just go to them directly in person or online and apply through them to avoid the pay cut
Your eating the deliveries is that how im reading this
I do but they’re really really terrible. And I’m not going to lie. I’m either a bad employee although I know I’m not I’m not, or I’m getting slower and slower every day and I’m trying to work on it every day. I just need more motivation. San Bernardino County is terrible.
I’ve applied at 3-5 agencies in the course of 3 months… They all found reasons to fire me. Dumb reasons.
30-45k miles/year of pure city driving rips cars apart pretty quick, especially any that are affordable enough for someone to deliver food with
I cant give more details for opsec reasons but, that is not accurate in my real world experience. so we will have to disagree on that one. you have to really be driving it like a jackass for it to break after 3 years.
are we talking like, a standard cheap 2023 economy box? the only way your statement seems true is if we are talking about cars already like 5-10 yrs old.
so many variables, but mainly how hard your guy drives it and how bad the conditions are
man i feel you there. they often set unrealistic rates on these types of jobs sadly. i struggled to make rate at multiple positions as well . its just a combo of me being 10% retarded, and the ridiculous work load.
It’s stupid ridiculous. Fuck corporate America.
Yes, he started with a POS car. My buddy hit hard times and went through three used cars that he bought from private owners. All of these cars were above 175,000 miles and needed suspension work as well as the usual external engine stuff like plugs and actuators. He ran through all 3 while doing rideshare and delivering mostly for Walmart Spark but there was some DoorDash mixed in.
If the OP is rocking a newish car then my previous statements are kinda moot… It seems that he has no license though so I think its back to the chalk board either way
I think we have our definitions of hard times misconstrued. Well, actually I think you do.
Im sure if my friend had started off with a reasonable vehicle his plans of working ride share apps and grocery delivery would have panned out but he had run into a serious financial issue due to a serious illness. By the time he had recovered he had essentially no money left and had sold his assets.
Your advice sounds solid if one has the money to buy a new car to dedicate to rideshare but to frame it as real world experience makes me think that you don’t understand poverty…or how real of an experience that is. Not all cars can rideshare, and the ones that a cancer patient who barely survived can afford aren’t pretty nor were they made in the last decade.
Combo that with the fact the the original poster said he had epilepsy, yet there’s been over 10 suggestions for driving centric jobs.
Guys, seizure patients get their licenses limited or revoked. You do not want someone having a seizure on the road. Hard stop. You’re all telling him to go crash and die basically or get arrested for driving with a revoked license. Again, I understand where everyone is coming from, but you have to consider all the factors, including his epilepsy.
It’s really easy to read selectively and say, “just do ubereat or door dash bro!”
Yeah…i caught that pretty late in the game. My bad OP, it turns out driving an Amazon van isnt the solution but there are an odd amount of telemarketing gigs on Indeed this morning and I recommend that you go out for one of those.
I also have a friend who does that, and they make it sound like its the lovliest little office gig in the tiniest cubicle designed for a human to sit in…lol it pays well though and from my understanding most jobs in that field start anywhere from $18-20 an hour.
You’ll make more by going to the nearest $20/hr+ fast food restaurant that offers overtime. 10-30 hours of overtime and you’re looking at 30+hr and if you can stack that. You’ll recover faster than any job. Humbling yourself pays you faster than anything.
The best advice if you can do it was the car sales idea from SISU. Used car salesman can make 100k the first year easily. Don’t go for new car sales. They lock them down to about 200-300$ commissions and give a base pay now. Used car lots and mom and pop financing spots are where you can turn into six figures from nothing.
You gotta see the commission structure these days however, a lot of lots have sub par commissions regrettably so you gotta know what you’re looking for. Internet sales have really forced commissions down on cars. Which is healthy for the consumer, but removed the incentive for many. Finance manager promotions however are a lifetime retirement career. Once you are in the loan positions you’re far better off.
Verizon and T-Mobile/Metro phone sales are decent if you’re in a heavy traffic area and not a third party retailer (direct corporate).
Warehouses are always looking if you can handle the lifting and labor. Amazon, FedEx, UPS, USPS are all hiring seasonal right now and that can lead to more permanent work.
I think you may be correct there. I know of at least 3 McDonalds in my area offering $19 or more per hour and overtime pay adds up very quickly. That Epilepsy might get in the way of doing certain tasks but they’re almost always hiring for all positions at these fast food establishments. Maintenance work is a bit rougher on the back but at least as a Mcdonalds maintenance guy OP wouldnt have to fear having a seizure while loading the fry basket. No one wants crispy face flakes in their McFry box lol.
