I’ve pretty much consistently used a SPX quarter horse electric hydraulic pump hooked up to a car battery for the power source but the big red hand powered presses would work just as good as long as you have a nice low profile hydraulic cylinder for it
Have you used the new LT3 controller with the v2 press yet? You said you prefer the older LT2 but was just curious if you have tried it. The LT v2 w/ the BVA pump and the new LT3 controller has a pressure gauge at the pump and a readout on the controller. It can be set to show plate pressure. Looks like you get a digital and analog pressure readout for redundancy.
I found a used LT v2 locally with the short 20ton BVA press and handpump with the LT2 controller. They’re asking 1800.
I usually prefer to buy new if the company offers a warranty. Since LT doesn’t offer kits with the LT2 controller anymore, the only way to get it new is to buy the components separate which would end up costing more than buying a new kit with the new LT3 controller.
I kind of like that the new controller links up to a computer and helps time, track and log presses. Seems like it would be a lot easier to be consistent without having to keep manual logs
Why would I have a digital readout display pressure when an analog gauge would do the same thing and not have 108927390812739817298371298 points of failure. I have little to no interest in running that controller on any press. At that point I would be terrified i’m gonna face the same amount of BS that I had to deal with on the PurePressure unit. Give me old technology that is foolproof and won’t break.
I want consistency not fancy. Did you not read what I said about the v3 controller that is literally the same one controlling my washer? No fucking thank you, touch screens aren’t good at all for anything involving particulate sticking to the screen. Give me a pen and paper next to my press that way a year in I don’t have to stop production because there’s some ungodly touch screen problem.
Yes, I know you dislike the controller on your washer. The new controller for the v2 uses the same touch screen but its implementation is different with the press. So while it may be a pain in the ass using the digital screen, would the claimed benefits be worth dealing with the touch screen?
I only ask, because as a pro you can better understand their marketing and let me know if its just bullshit.
They claim the new controller measures platen pressure in real time. They say this helps gauge flow and determine when the material has more or less stop producing oil at that pressure point
Do you think this kind of data would be beneficial for people new to rosin or is it all pretty much useless features and marketing gimmicks?
Not that it pertains to me, but maybe it does for you, does the medusa setup only work with the new controllers? Being able to run multiple presses from the same pump at the same time seems pretty awesome for larger producers
Medusa presses are just their normal ones ran through a hydraulic manifold so it controls the actuation of all presses at once vs. just one. No difference in what they run press-wise. I personally never felt the need to run any grouped setups like that since if you have all your bags, parchment, etc all set up in the first place and good to go you can rapid fire output anyway. I’ve always been under the train of thought that rosin is arguably the highest priced extract out there, it deserves the personal touch vs. just blasting out as much as possible by any means necessary because like i’ll touch in in the next paragraph, almost all bag PSIs are varying and I like to know exactly what my material is doing that I took all the time to grow, wash and then press. Too much caution to the wind for me when customers expect a higher quality extract for a higher price point.
And marketing. Nailed it. They made a great product the first time that doesn’t need to be reinvented. Pressures are subjective for all strains and skills of the grower producing the material so really I don’t see the need for logging pressures as usually i’m not even looking at the pressure gauge other than to see where ‘0psi but jumping when I put a tiny bit of pressure on’ as a starting point, otherwise the rest is all done visually. One bag could be packed tighter, one looser, one with a different strain, etc. - none will have the same reaction to psi. - even if I had 100 presses of the same material to run I likely wouldn’t really use the gauge. My extent of using the gauge other than to find ‘bouncing 0psi’ is just to make sure i’m not eclipsing 2k psi or so but even then that’s when i’m checking to see if there’s anything left in the bag because if there is, the pressure will reduce as the material is coming out.
Honestly, if anything paying TOO close of attention to psi is a detriment to newer rosin makers as they need to trust their eyes way more. Think of them as gauges on a car. I’m not going to drive 100% looking at my RPM/fuel pressure/oil pressure, but with those I’ll know if i’m going to blow my engine. I need to know when my RPM is too low and I need to know when my RPM is too high, keeping constant watch on numbers vs end result of product will fry your expectations of what you’re potentially going to get as then it’s reduced to ‘WELL I WAS ON THE PSI IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE’ without taking into consideration of what’s in your rosin bag in the first place.
You can visually see this as you’re pressing. It may take a while to get keen to noticing the factors of flow rate and if you’re nearing the end of a press, but ultimately you will be able to gauge that visually with ease.
And I need not to say more as @SubstituteCreature covered it above with ![]()
I always loved these kinds of analog controls on shitty cheap chinese equipment. Very Wallace and Grommet.
I love me a good switch/dial/knob, there’s something to be said for haptic feedback.
100% why I don’t want to give mine up, it’s got that nice clicky feel and usually when knobs like that fuck up it’s just a few sprays of electrical contact cleaner away from working perfectly again, less than 2 minutes worth of work. Can’t really do that with touch screens
You ever seen a press discolor like this @SubstituteCreature ?
At first dude said it was dirty from rosin and he would clean it. Then he tried cleaning it with iso and couldn’t get it off, suggested a stronger solvent? The plates are anodized metal, not sure what rosin wouldn’t clean off.
Could they have gotten too hot or something? I can’t imagine that would happen but I can’t imagine rosin staining it or not coming off with iso either
Oh yeah but you should be good, it won’t affect anything. If you want to double check and make sure everything is on point I suggest using a laser thermometer - shit works great to make sure the elements are matching what you set it at. Have fun bro! That’s exactly the setup I use minus the pump
Garlic Juice 73u, shout out @SubstituteCreature for all of the knowledge sprinkled throughout this thread.
Looking fucking good bro!!
First press and first press. Some Crazy Bitch from CSI Humboldt. Flower rosin with a 2 month cure. Pressed at 160 in a 25u bag. Excited to finish my next grow so I can run some fresh material. I need to pickup some new bubble bags too.
@SubstituteCreature what’s your preferred way to deal with flower that might not wash?
I’m growing some Wrank r2 from Ethos. Running clones from my pheno hunt. The plant I selected has insane resin production but the flower is dense as a rock.
Is it worth getting a prepress and squishing flower? Or just wash it? Do some strains squish better than they wash? Maybe the material is more flexible when fresh frozen and washed than when its dried as flower?
Nah don’t bother squishing flower, too many fats and waxes, the fucker will leave your banger black every time. Wash it every time if you want good results but that’s mainly leaning toward FF
End result looks great though man!
I know you’re using your osprey these days, but do you have bag recommendations?
The guy I bought the press from had some Micron Extract bags for sale, but they had been worked pretty well.
I was going to pick up some Icextract bags. Since I’m only running bubble for rosin I figure I don’t need a full 8 bag set
Know any breeders who specifically sell washer genetics? CSI Humboldt had a great Black Friday sale going on, was going to stock up on some of his seeds again, but idk what washes well from him .
At this point almost every company’s bags are comparable, even the expensive ones. As long as you get the full mesh types you’ll be just fine. I personally have been using a cheap ass set for god knows how long and they function the same as the super pricy bubbleman bags I have
Boldt bags are relatively nice for the strap they have to hold bags.
Press club sucks ass they’re thin and tear easy. The 160 bag and the 73 or 45 bag are the same length. So that 73 or 45 is a bitch to pull for no reason
Bruteless work bag is very versatile for washing and can take a few snacks if a newbie is washing with the paddle.
Bubbleman is a go to for quality, make sure to get full mesh nothing else. You want as much surface area for your mesh to be efficient as possible.
Pure pressure bags are just expensive and not as good compared to bubbleman imo.
As far as washers go, check out happydreamsgenetics tell mr d I specifically sent you for washers he will send you the 7-8%ers
Bloom has a black friday sale coming up. The crunch berries from fiya farmer has been my favorite flavor recently personally
