Nanoemmulsions - and Surfactants

These are from the papers I have : 3.8x the amount of Q-natural as oil.

Did you find a solution?

I looked into the Q-naturale as a possible solution but the rep. said it won’t work for ABV > 10%.
I’ve thought perhaps L-α-Phosphatidylcholine could work as it is soluble in alcohol, but it is quite pricey. Would make any products kind of cost prohibitive to use in high quantities. Gum Arabic just turns to clumps when in high ABV’s . Vegetable Glycerine dissolves in both H20 and Alcohol but hasn’t shown to be an effective emulsifier thus far. I wonder if making the cannabinoids water soluble first might increase the chances of homogenization?

Yes, I think that is what they’re saying. Have you tried it? Sometimes too much emulsifier can cause it’s own problems and less works better.

No, I think I will just stick with the standard Q-naturale without alcohol.

What are you trying to make?

@MagisterChemist I haven’t tried it yet, but I will. I’ve been in contact with Hielscher and they seem to think I’m overprocessing the emulsions!

How long are you sonicating?

25 minutes usually… the email suggested that for my volume I should only be doing 4-5 minutes!

haha, you might also be completely destroying the cannabinoids. Your batch must be becoming very hot. I’ve noticed 2-3 min is enough. If I mix the oil with a bit of alcohol it cuts it down by half.

They advised me to use their pulse feature, but haven’t had good results with it so far.

Have you tried just isolate in water? Hielscher says at 1% that’ll work without emulsifier…

And I usually run it in an ice bath, mainly to protect the sonotrode, but lesson learned - it’s much faster than I thought! I’ll report back what works and what doesn’t after attempting faster mixes!

Great look forwarad to it, Are you using the citric acid and sodium?

Not yet, I’ll worry about preservatives once I get the basic translucent emulsion down.

Are you able to achieve translucent emulsion in 2-3 minutes? Do you make a coarse emulsion first and then sonicate or just go straight into the sonocator?

What was the exact formula you used?

I just tried:

40 ML Q-Natural
10 ML MCT CBD OIl
2.5 G Citric Acid
40 ML dionised water

  • Result is basically milk - with a shitload of foam.

That’s exactly what mine looked like! I used about the same ratios. Mine got translucent after high shear mixing.

Do you have an high shear mixer - or do you mean just kept working it with ultrasound?

Have you had any luck yet?

@TheGoodBud Yeah we have a high shear mixer too. I think making a “coarse” emulsion with the mixer first and then a fine emulsion seems to work better.

Haven’t tried it yet. Waiting to hear back from a food scientist on the matter to see their thoughts.

@TheGoodBud

Btw, this is the successful formulation I tried:
0.6g distillate
17.1g q-naturale
42.3g water

I used a combination of high shear mixing and sonication.

What’s the cannabinoid content of your distillate? 80-90%?

I think I’ve hit a brick wall - I’m trying to make 1 MG THC per drink with a full spectrum oil which has 0.17% THC. The result is that I have to use 4-5x the EU legal amount of surfactant. Makes everything taste like ass, and

The other option is that I just use an ethanol solution and add it to drinks and making them slightly alcoholic. Any idea if that would work / if bioavailability works without any oils being ingested?

Or find a partner that could send us a ready made water soluble solution which is already >0.2%

so thats 1% distillate? Assuming good stuff at 90% thc that means you get about 530 mg in 600 g or ~.8-.9 mg/g?

Not bad, a 12 oz bottle would make me smile :exploding_head:
