Addition isn’t genetic but behaviors are genetic. Genetics are certainly a factor for Impulse control.
Anything that removes you from your true self and potential is equally as damaging
I think alcohol meth and opiates are the main ones that do this
There’s a selfish payoff in being an addict
It’s not a disease. It’s selfishness and lack of control and being enabled
I just said it wasn’t a disease lol
I didn’t mean to direct that at you ![]()
Getting burned would be negative reinforcement, and i think it would be easier to learn from something if that something hurts you.
But drugs hotwire the feeling of pleasure in your brain. It’s understandable that it’s harder to kick something that makes you feel good even if it’s hurting you or people around you. So you’re definitely right, drug use is inherently selfish.
You know the whole time what your are doing.
It’s you that’s making that descion to do something self destructive
Alright, so, I just feel the need to explain this. Since half you guys don’t know what causes addiction, even scarier ya’lls simplistic views on people.
Addiction is generally a reaction to neuronal pruning that happens as you develop as a child, neuronal pruning is when you’re a baby, you have the most neuronal connections, as you develop, and experience new things, your brain shuts down certain connections, and reinforces others, this is all well and good, until let’s say, you aren’t given proper nurturing, you deal with trauma, and for the sake of this thread, let’s say your dopamine passages don’t get reinforced as they should through positive reinforcement., so they don’t develop thoroughly. Making the predisposition for outside means of soliciting a dopamine response much more likely (that’s everything from shopping, to meth)
^^^this is also why people with concussions, brain injury, etc are also likely to abuse substances.
I would agree with Tennessee on that, environmental factors are everything (which is why I said, if other substances were more prevalent, we’d see more problems with them, instead we see what we consider traditional problems)
Genetic is the old school train of thought, I haven’t seen any meaningful genetic studies with depression. (Doesn’t mean there isn’t one, stress can change gene expression etc.)
Addiction is not a disease, but a symptom of something that’s only just now being understood. Neuroscience is just scratching at it, developmental science is just wrapping its head around it, and the people effected by it, are trying to find things, because they don’t understand why they hurt, so they reach for what they understand gives them a feeling of bliss.
Addiction, however, the vast majority, is all environmental.
Nurture your children properly.
People that abuse substances tend to end up with brain injuries and concussions in my experience.
And if you’re a piece of shit don’t have kids. For society’s sake.
Not directed at anyone in this thread
So I’m not just blowing it out my ass.
BTW, just wanna say thank you to everyone here discussing this topic, it hits home close to all of us, given why we are even on this forum, and the fact that you even entertained my perspective, means a lot. Thank you all, and I appreciate anyone who has read what I have said and not taken offense, but gave it understanding. At the end of the day, thats all I am after, to be understood.
At the end of the day, nobody consumes anything extra for no reason, there is always a reason, and the fact that you guys didn’t just blow off what I am saying, means the world. I hope you guys learned a bit, as I have.
Appreciate the insights man!
See all the threads here dont have to be pissing matches, we can get along and learn from eachother, all other behavior is little dick energy
That peepee energy be keeping people down man.
I’d say if anything, pick your poisons, carefully, there is a give and take to it all, and I give people caution to it all, realistically, I wish nobody needed anything added to their lives to make it bearable, I think it’s a tragic part of the human condition, but with understanding, we can treat each other with the care and respect we all deserve, and need.
I hope my, and any of ya’lls children, never feel the need, and that they, and any of us, are given the nurturing environment necessary to just be a normal geek, with normal problems, but I have a hunch, all the people here, unfortunately or fortunately have felt, not quite right in their skulls. Take time for yourself, take moments that are important to you, and may your spirit savor them, be blessed with all that makes you happy today, and everyday. Blessings to everyone here, just trying to understand this stuff (and themselves)
I haven’t read through this thread but god damn based on the skim over we have some actual real discourse THINK TANKIN’ type energy and that is so fucking cool to see.
This place has been real shit lately, I mean- it’s obvious as to why… @Rowan was banned indefinitely and the whole place went down the tubes.
Multiple people have said addiction is not a disease … can you imagine if it wasn’t classified as a disease? It’s all political and the healthcare industry already doesn’t do much with what they have available to treat it. Declassifying it from a disease would take all form of healthcare off the table for it.
I do believe addiction has some sort of physiological roots, that could, or one day will be fully identified, and that it will be considered some form of disorder. But, we are apes that wear clothes, so we just aren’t there yet as to how to properly manage it.
I always ask this question to people when in their own fight. “At what point is the guy at the end of the bar, with his beer having a good time, and at what point, is it kind of sad?”
Thats a chicken and the egg question right there, was it lack of impulse that leads to risky behavior, and led to injury, or do they seek because of the injury, that damaged their impulse control.
I questioned my want to try meth at one point when I was a methylphenidate addict as a teenager. Sorta luckily, I tried cocaine and thought it was stupid and stuck to snorting methylphenidate.
… Man I feel stupid saying all that but it’s true.
Methylphenidate is a helluva drug… I do not miss it though.
