You should be able to tell 3n from growth defects. This would be triploidy and there is a paper by Fox and Spradling you would find interesting if you want to look into it further. Polyploidy in terms of making bigger plants and bigger polyploid tissues like trichomes is going to be more like 4n, 8n, 16n… all the way up to hundreds of thousands n.
