Isomer or Synthetic Compound ? - Delta-8

What is Delta-8? Is it an Isomerized delta-9? Is it some reaction that just happens and a distillation process after to purify?

How would it be considered “synthetic” if it’s cannabis or hemp derived? Is the word “synthetic” being tossed around in the media due to lack of knowledge about the process? What is delta-8 by this sites definition more so the people who have made it and used its definition which I have neither but I need to know what it would truly be considered.

I am asking because my brother asked me and I said an Isomerization to delta-8 because I personally don’t think you can synthetically make delta-8

I Can make almost pure D8 or D9 from yeast or citral :man_shrugging: synthetics generally have to do with your starting material if its its naturally occurring like thca and you decarb into D9 thats considered a semi synthetic but if you take that same D9 and make it into CBN its fully synthetic so since all D8 for sale is made from a CBD-D9-D8 conversion its a fully synthetic cannabinoid

Lol when @Kingofthekush420 reads this he’s gonna type so hard.

I don’t know if I’d agree with that. If the starting material came from a plant, it is usually considered semi-synthetic regardless of how many steps are required for the end product.

Biologically derived compounds can be the starting point for synthesis and you can still call the end product synthetic. IMO D8 is synthetic because it does not exist in the CBD isolate you start with and is produced by humans using a chemical process. Same for CBN, same for THCV (unless actually just concentrated through chromatography).

Although I do not include decarbing as “synthesis”…

Cool thats how we determine semi vs full synthetic medications in the phamauctical industry

What is it then?

I’m not involved in pharmaceuticals so maybe your definition is different. LSD is a well known example of a semi-synthetic drug. Can you give me an example of a semi-synthetic pharmaceutical? It seems to me like everything could be considered synthetic under that definition. You probably know more than me though :kissing_smiling_eyes:

Oxycontin
Morphine
Hydrocodone

And so what is the difference here? It’s a multi step synthesis that leads to a semi-synthetic molecule in either case from my understanding. I must be missing something obvious.

I would think isomerizing…

Fully synthetic opioids are opioids that are completely manmade, and include fentanyl, pethidine, levorphanol, methadone, tramadol, and dextropropoxyphene

Semi synthetic opioids : Semisynthesis is a type of chemical synthesis that uses compounds isolated from natural sources (eg, plants) as starting materials. Semi synthetic opioids include heroin, oxycodone, oxymorphone, and hydrocodone.

Are you making D8 thca??

No, I have no interest I just wanted to know what it was considered.

no, that’s semi-synthetic.

That’s also the definition of semi-synthetic.

this is correct.

Omg :man_facepalming: keep up buddy, if decarbing isnt turning your D9 thca to D8 THCa then its not isomertized its converted

Okay I understand now. :octopus:

I’m going to stick with the Father of Cannabis (Mechoulam) on this, see he patented the methods that most people are using to do this work back in the early 2000’s.

This is a chemical synthesis.

Regardless of where or what it is derived from. You could get all the precursors not from Hemp if you wanted. For instance, cannabinoids from tobacco (being done at the university of Maine) or from industrial byproducts (like say, orange peels or sugar stalks).

Derivation has nothing to do with natural or synthetic materials - its a legal term almost exclusively applicable to Hemp.

Honestly - I think the only reason people are even trying to convince each other that its not a chemical synthesis is because the DEA says that synthetic THC analogs (which includes a whole lot of stuff…) are illegal. And hempsters don’t want anything derived from hemp to be illegal. Even though D9 can be derived from hemp. -shrug-

So the DEA just needs to be a bit more specific about its definitions - and then we can all go back to being actual scientists/engineers/etc. acknowledging what chemical synthesis is without trying to hide behind the semantics.

I got two degrees in pharmaceuticals that disagree with you
