I am actually excited to try this on crude to disty. It will make it so easy. And I noticed it totally depends on the thc percentage. If it was weak as hell before. I wasn’t getting much. If it was relatively potent, it did alright.
@Dred_pirate. Are you sure it will make it so easy cause i dont really see how this makes distilling any easier. Maybe a carbon Scrub less but your still gonna have to winterize and dewax because no matter how good we do in the closed loop…There is still gonna be some waxes.
Doing this to crude really only saves one step maybe. Not everyone carbon scrubs and really this is the only thing that i see replacing.
Unless you know from experience…you do work in a real lab. I work out of a room in my house.
The cleaner the input material, the better the disty, right? I’ve never seen crude be that transparent.
You 100% right on crude never being so clear…but all the other stuff is still there, like terps and waxes.
There is no arguing the cleaner input the better the output will be but if this is for distillations your still gonna have to post process it no matter what.
I could be wrong though…looking forward to you proving it though
Post processing I’m not disagreeing with. Just easier to distill. Not process . Even though it has been mostly dewaxed. Probably only need a single maybe double pass in the cryo then roto, decarb, volatile and still.
thats kinda what i noticed…When i dewaxed im my extractor. I did pick up waxes but no where near the amount i hear on this site. I thought i was just special. Its cause i ran subzero solvent and a dewaxer. I picked up less than 10 grams off 600g of crude i winterized and dewaxed post extraction. Nothing like 5-10% i hear people talk of.
On my third Cyro Bath. There wasnt anything but a tinted filter paper.
I cant wait to see your distillation setup when you get ready. I imagine its gonna be pretty baller.
When that day comes. Still have to put it together
should build that bike first!! LOL
Need a place to live more. Plus that short path will buy me a bike after I turn it on a few times
Distillate comes out stable…I’d like to see breaking dabs play with it
@Soxhlet Yeah, it can taste off if the trim is mixed strains or at least a funky strain flavor combination, but using single strain trim, even sun leaves and such, generally yields decent flavor when it’s done correctly. It has that smooth hit and less astringent flavor similar to cold ethanol extracted shatter, due to some fat and terpene (mainly terpene oxides) removal.
@sonicgardens See above. @ExTek90 is technically correct… you cannot dilute your product by adding a bit of flavoring and retain the exact same cannabinoid concentration/potency. However, a little flavor goes a long way, so the reduction in potency will be no different than if it was simply a higher terpene extract.
@ExTek90 It is quite possible to turn what would otherwise come out soft or sappy into a stable shatter or pull & snap, using proper extraction and polishing methods, while still retaining the original flavor, but safely subdued terpene levels for smoother hits, as described above. The final purge methods are also important for good consistency and flavor.
@Killa12345 Your low apparent wax content from your dewaxer is reasonable with properly chilled extraction solvent and no unnecessarily long soak time. Many times folks extract too warm or long, which pulls more fat and wax, and/or they overdo the dewaxing step, causing some of the THCa to crash out with the waxes. If your solvent is sufficiently cold (-40 to -60°C) and contact time is sufficiently brief (use colder solvent for bigger columns due to inherently longer contact time due to longer filling time), then your extraction will be cleaner and more selective. In fact, dewaxing isn’t even necessary if you really dial in the extraction methods.
@Dred_pirate Regardless of the temperature/contact time used, ALL alkane extractions pull epicuticular wax and vegetable oil from the herb, so even if you do inline dewaxing and find a way to completely decolor the resin from such an extraction, unless you also found a way to selectively soak up those large fat & wax molecules without also soaking up your cannabinoids, Winterization in cold 190 proof ethanol at some point is still essential to getting clean distillate.
@Waxplug1 Indeed, the yields on super colorless resin appear rather dismal, and one can certainly lose some cannabinoids in decoloring, but proper pre-treatment of your polishing materials, tuning for an acceptable final color, will mostly mitigate those problems. As you know, a lot of people don’t even want colorless stuff because they think it’s fake or whatever, not even realizing what a low-yielding expensive batch it was! ![]()
This is how I’ve done my bleaching, but I’m still working on what materials to use.
Process was basically dilute the crude with ethanol about 10ml per gram, and add 10% of the volume in grams of carbon and 5% in bentonite directly to the solution. Stir on a hot plate at about 100-150* F for an hour and filter through a buchner funnel. No messing around with butane needed, I think.
First filtration was meh but second was amazing, haven’t experimented with third of fourth yet but intend to soon. After reading this, I’m considering dumping the carbon, though, but I’m not sure what to replace it with. I think I read in here that silica wouldn’t play nice with our product and ethanol at warm temps? Is that accurate?
I completely agree with you on needing to be further processed to completely dewax before distilling. No matter how cold I get it in butane, it just won’t take out those certain lipids. But it will make my life easier when I have to.
I’m just stating from the distilling standpoint. Running material of that nature would be easy to make good distillate. In my opinion.
@Photon_noir Oh absolutely, I’ve always been under the impression that no one would want to waste their time trying to make a nice dabbable product from low quality trim. Never meant to say it isn’t possible, but, no matter what you do to moldy or especially old product as far as post processing is going to make it comparable to stuff made from high quality input material.
Garbage in is garbage out. I for one am convinced without a diverse and balanced terpene profile, you can’t make high grade medicine, and without relatively fresh or inert gas stored biomass, you just can’t get that.
i really enjoy old material processed for medicinal properties. I really need the CBN and old material is a way i get it. I think as long as there are terpenes present. the makeup of the compound is more important. and old material usually checks the boxes too.
This is strictly from a consumer point of view
So basically about the dewax part…if u know ur rig, no soak…run cryo cold, and can keep temp, then you WILL NOT take wax
And I mean dry ice cold pushing w n2
I really think that plus my jacket material column and I’m actually not pulling wax…
Keep in mind my material column 2", thus the keeping the temp comment, much easier bc smaller
And that basically I’ll never needed 2nd stage bc my rig size
I think CBN is great, in my experience it makes me feel entirely too groggy in the morning. I think there’s a way to compliment CBN with CBD and terpenes that will avoid that issue though. I’m excited for when we can narrow down how to use minimal amounts of these compounds in formulation to make “pharmaceutical grade” medicines. Maximum purity with minimal dosing. Ideally, the person using it purely for the medicinal aspects wouldn’t even notice any type of “head change” and would instead just get relief.
i smoke only high THC products from 5:30am-8pm. At 8pm, i use a mixture of 1:1 with a good amount of CBN. this has been a miracle to me and anyone that listens i tell them. I train on a bike 6 days a week. I use to use supplement, proteins, bcaa, vitamins.
Was gaining too much weight. now, i stopped all the extras and tried to get it all from whole foods… Still was getting sore and fatigued. Started smoking shitty old process material and everything changed. My body is completely new every morning despite putting it threw the ringer everyday. This is my personal story. This is how its changed me. I like when people offer me old cheap flower cause i just use it for medicine…mix in a bit of CBD isolate and im good.
The only thing that really changed was the smoking shitty oil processed from old material at nights mixed with cbd. Dont taste the greatest but not all medicine does and my body has reacted amazing to it.
So i saw someone comment on one of @Dred_pirate instagram posts and i saw @Photon_noir address this briefly. So i hate to ask again but wanted to bring it up to everyone for consideration. Obviously there is going be some loss of yield when filtering like this. However we (at the place i work) are trying to get an understanding of what an anyones average loss may look like. Saying if you ran 2 tubes of the same strain back to back, one with this filtration system and one just through the normal dewax column filters we put in and the mesh. Trying to look at things analytically before coming to the bosses with the tek, you know how it is. To them it’s all about the bottom line and how much wholesale they are able to get in relation to how much they sell. Trying to see if this option is viable for us currently. Obviously it could be sold for more but if they cant see the $ benefit unfortunately they won’t let me fuck with it. Anybody been doing any comparisons like this? Sorry to be the guy who asks about yield. The cleaner the meds the better in my opinion, unfortunately thats not how many companies/organizations see things currently. Much love to everyone ![]()

i will be doing that hopefully next Thursday. still waiting on my powders ffs. nvr use fedex smartpost
