Help for Dr. Tom’s (@mitokid) wife and son

Didn’t know him personally but was a very smart guy, evident by his posts and contributions.

Heart goes out to everyone who lost a friend and to his family, such a loss is heavy.

Dr. Tom was a cool guy, only spoke with him a few times on the phone by damn he was a smart guy. Hell of a chemist.

This is heartbreaking, I had just texted him on the 18th looking for a literature recommendation and was surprised I never heard back - Tom always would get back to you, especially about chemistry.

If anyone wants to see @mitokid smoke me in rapid chess, there is a link to the series here. I think my record against him was 2W - 11L - 1D. Tom would hold a position, introduce clever threats forcing you to make decisions under pressure, and then clinically squeeze a victory from your inaccuracies. As I improved, I kept telling myself I’d get a chance to even out our record.

Salute to a good dude.

Hey everyone, Dr. Tom’s son here. My mother and I just read through all the comments on this post and it warms our hearts so deeply to see people write so highly of him, to see how much he challenged, taught, and inspired so many of you. We miss him so much, and we’re so grateful that you all are willing to help support us through this right now as we try our best to transition to life without him.
Thank you, your donations and especially your comments about him mean so much to us.

A few years ago I got him this shirt for his birthday:

It was awesome reviewing his matches with you on Lichess; taking as many pieces until the opponent resigns was his style, and I picked it up from him. But, I never beat him in a game. Not once. I swore I would one day, but now he’ll remain the eternal victor.

He made me work/suffer to get those wins haha. Below a certain skill level, you can just make sort of passive enough moves, so long as you don’t hang a piece, and wait for the other person to blunder first - that wouldn’t have worked against your pops, and I underestimated him for a few games before accepting he was just a stronger player. I’d like to think I’ve improved.

If you still play, feel free to add that account and shoot over a challenge sometime!

This made me cry last night. My condolences to his family and everyone close to him. I am going to miss seeing his name around here.

Why do the ones who made a positive impact have to leave us so soon.

Only talked to him a handful of times on here but he was always helpful and generous in his knowledge. Wanted everyone to succeed. Was a voice of reason.

A bright light in an otherwise dim world.

I’ve thought what I’m going to say to this as this is my second chemist that has passed.

Mitokid was such a good mentor. He knew so much and could figure it out so quick it was unreal. I have always thought myself as R&D but I was trained in process for scale.

It has laid heavy with me for the past months as I forgot to send the shulgin institute while Thomas ran it the stuff I was supposed to send him.

@mj_martini if you are involved. I have the stuff I was supposed to send to y’all. It would be an honor.

I’m so sorry I fucked up.

Didn’t believe it when I heard this but Fuck.

A little push to get his wife and son through the next month or so.

Thank you to everyone who gave what they could and especially the sharing of your Dr Tom stories.

I know this is a little late but I just came across this thread. My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Tom. He was always a bright person to interact with on this forum. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting him in person, I know we would have got along just great. He personally helped me with a few problems I ran into on my short path for which I am truly grateful. May he be remembered fondly.

Hi everyone,

Thank you to everyone who commented and donated. We raised $2K, and his wife, son and I are extremely thankful.

Just wanted to let folks know that I’m just putting the final info and pictures together for the GoFundMe fundraiser.

Dr. Tom has finally returned to California from Canada, but as you can imagine it’s going to take more than a couple months for his family to get through the all the difficult duties and changes to their lives.

Hopefully, this longer running and sharable GoFundMe fundraiser will help provide his wife with a small cushion to help her make it through the transition.

Everyone reach out to @mj_martini and give him some love. He has done so much for others recently and he could use some virtual hugs from us all, as he is losing someone he holds dear to his heart. #cuckfancer
