Handling distillate to minimize loss

Working with some distillate making 90/10 carts for small company I started when the pandemic smacked.

January we decided to get into the cart game got our mixes done and tested now making carts has been a 15% loss experience. Wanting to snap that to around 5% we homoginize but have gone trough 2 in as many months. Just got a sonicator per a post I saw. But what I am looking for is some input from the pros. How do I best seperate into batches better.

Would cooling the distillate allow me to use a rigid needle/blade to scoop and cut :scissors: or am I ignoring how much of bitch this can be in small batch. Any input would be appreciated.

Way to go getting a company going during the pandemic! Hopefully we can offer some help. Can you tell us a little more about your process so we can look for areas of improvement?

15% loss sounds like a lot for any size batch. Using smaller scale glassware may help cut down on losses there. You could try scooping and cutting, but I would think that would drive me nuts. Heating the distillate would make it easy to measure and transfer with a syringe, while leaving less residue on your beaker walls from pouring.

What kind of homogenizer have you been using/killing? How big are your batches on average?

Distillate is in 1 liter bottle move that into Boro griffin low forms. 100g batches, my loss as come mainly to this hardening on needles glass my gloves. I set up two" hot water baths" at 170 1 inch higher than distillate, heat up my homogenizer attachment whole thing on ebay $129.99 mix the heated distillate 30 seconds, add diluent and 30 seconds more then add terps 30 more.(terps 7% and terp diluent 3% True Terpenes)

Now I need a cart farm and have loss due to using 50 shot bullshit. I’m better off using 5ml syringes and with that I pulled 92 carts out of 110g.

I cam reclaim all day but that’s a pain and I don’t have capability to use ethanol.

Just a heads up, most 1g carts are 1.05-1.1 when filled up.

Ways to minimize loss: Don’t clean jars. Cover and reuse for the same flavor. If space is an issue you can heat gun but you’ll still have loss.
Get proper filling equipment.
The homogenizer is probably eating a gram or two if you’re not heat gunning it.

Sounds like a cart farmer would help cut back on your losses. You’ll get way better control, meaning less on your gloves, and less overfilling due to repeatable accuracy.

For the price your paying for the homogenizers, it’s no surprise they are only lasting a month. Doesn’t sound like you’re abusing them too much. Sounds like the Cat Scientific is the brand to get, but I can’t speak from experience there.

Have you measured by weight how much you’re actually adding to a cart? You can put more than 1 gram in a cart especially when filling carts with hot oil.

@SanitatemDime beat me to it while I stopped to go make food. That’s probably the issue.

Here’s a link to a thread about cheap homogenizers:

I am measuring post fill and aiming for 1.05 or higher and do so the .9s get to the shop owners or friends for freebies but yes I need a better filler the cart farm looks amazing but sold out.

That’s the exact one I use it’s on Amazon for 400 plus it’s trash I tossed 100mg on a run that had metal or some black crop dust off on me the second one that busted. So yeah it’s trash. Hoping to Sonicate in a 3L sonicator off of ebay

Ooh, yeah that doesn’t sound good at all. Hopefully the sonicator give you better results. Let us know how it works out. Thanks for letting us know another good reason to avoid cheap homogenizers.

The entire makeup of it is open to shit dropping out. So yeah not great Alibaba may just get 600 from me at some point. I too hope the sonicator works out.

I have to perfect my pour out of the 1 liter. And show get my hands on a cart farm.

keep an eye on ebay and find a better quality brand lightly used. The generators in themselves are over 1000, thats on top of the homogenizer. Ive seen packages in the sold section that were a steal. Sonicator has its applications but I think itll be loud. Unfortunately businesses are failing left and right so there are steals on commercial equipment.

you will continue to throw away cannabinoids until you do…

You don’t have to be able to recover the ethanol at first, just remove it.

Should elaborate I’m in a small space 650sqft with only a 7x7 cleanroom. So without over head exhaust it can be dumb way to die for me lol.

Idk what’s holding me back but I feel like I’m afraid to heat it up to the right temp I’m in the low 160s and just ordered a sous vide for water baths.

Side note was able to pick up a homoginizer scilogex and a t7 attachment for under 300 so I’m psyched to have that small precise blade.
