Has anyone ever tried grafting a used root zone into a teen plant? Similar to how tomato growers graft in a second root ball?

Tomatoes as a vining plant don’t swell up in stem size as they get older like cannabis does. You might be trying to pair stems of very different sizes.
This can be done in cannabis, but - as the paper quoted above shows - doing grafting in the cloning stage is much easier and has a lower cost and higher success rate.
