I just wish delphiniums were hardy to zone 8. I’m in 8a and they are hardy to 7. I may try and overwinter that one along with some of my other annual herbs (lemongrass, pineapple sage, etc.).

And @Miles-Beyond, go to India if you want some interesting varieties of bougainvillea. Most commonly used landscaping plant I saw when I was there. I used to have them in the yard growing up and hated having to do yard work around them. So many spines. Now I appreciate the plant having them.

If they’re hardy to zone 7 you should be good to go in zone 8. Zone 8 should be warmer than 7. Smaller numbers are colder zones. Either way, over wintering a plant hardy to one zone away shouldn’t be too hard if covered and mulched enough.

Microclimate plays a huge part in how well something less than hardy for you zone can handle the winter. I have to dig my canna bulbs and bring them in for the winter. My grandma had some that she could leave in the ground because they were next to the part of her house where the wood stove was in the basement. Kept the should warm enough to keep them alive.

Thanks to global warming I now live in zone 5. Used to be zone 4 back when I was I kid.

They are magnificent specimens. There’s a greenhouse biz that I visit twice a year just to hang out with this humongous boog. It’s been there 30 years and is beautiful.
Planning a trip to India hopefully after the virus subsides and the country can recover a bit.

Those poor nestertium look so sad! Even more sad than the ones I still have to plant. Haha. They taste so good.

This here are a few of my purple bubblegum plants. Too pretty to not post a picture of the foliage. Pepper pictures will come soon. Couldn’t get a good picture of the stalk and branches, but they are all a rich, deep purple color.

They are called tip top. Some Alaskan salmon plant? I think they are all doing well. I’ll show what comes to be. Hey by the way how do I know when the hot peppers are ready? Small ones are hot as I can handle.

Peruvian Purple from early August last year. One of my favorites. It has purple leaves, flowers, fruit, and stems. Peppers ripen red, with the heat of a hotter jalapeño.

Nasturtium has a radish bite that turns sweet like honeysuckle at the end, it’s a bad ass of edible flowers. Love it.

Depends on the variety. As peppers mature they change colors. Most every green pepper is technically an unripe pepper. Jalapeños turn red, orange, or yellow, depending on the variety, when ripe.

Some peppers are bred to be ripe when green and have a different color of more pale yellow, almost white, as the pepper is developing. Some peppers are purple while ripening. You can find a pepper darn near every color of the rainbow in both ripe and unripe form.

Really, without knowing the breed, I can’t tell you exactly what to look for. Generally speaking, you want to see a uniform color change (unless you have multicolor peppers like I do). Even with a multicolor pepper, you will see a ton of color change.

Another fun thing about peppers is that if you feel like they taste good, at any stage of ripeness, pick them and use them. No law saying it has to be picked at any given time. Capsaicin will increase with ripeness, but again, if you like the taste, who cares how ripe it is?!
