Clones

What was different about these two cuttings in regards to technique? Glad to see you here as well! I am trying to dial in my rock wool clone tech. I’ve had thousands and thousands root successfully and seemingly just as many over the years that weren’t up to snuff. As I will be stepping into a large facility soon, I am aiming to be more consistent.

SSF and BBM 2 weeks and 2 days from cut. Same treatment. BBM plenty of roots and green on top. SSF zero roots and a little rough on top. Just happy I clone more than I need to compensate for problems like this.

I would have issues with rooting some strains in ez cloners. Found I had much better success with rw cubes or root plugs (ez plugs work the best ime) under a humidity dome.

I used to use root riot plugs under a dome. I didnt like spraying them morning and night because if I forgot they would droop. I noticed some people say they dip there medium and let it ride. Was I doing it all wrong? I could have never had roots like that in 2 weeks with a plug. SSF is the only strain that has done this to me. I have never had less than a 90% success rate with any strain. These will root but it takes longer and thats not my issue. Its how she beats herself up in the process. Eventually she thrives but I am afraid that initial stress will just mess up the potential.

Try only having 1 inch of stem below the collars on hard to root strains

I have never seen anything more consistent for rooting than high pressure aeroponics. Pump needs to make about 35 psi. It’s not that hard to build everything yourself.

HPA is fucking awesome. We’re running 21 regular 144-spot cloners right now and I want to switch to HPA troughs with a central res. We modify our bases with cooling coils and it’s a fckin bitch dealing with 21 different coils. Only thing that concerns me is having the pump(s) fail with a non-sump system

It’s nice to see appreciation for hpa.

Fwiw I never had an aero pump fail. They should be plumbed inline underneath everything so there is always res water inside the pump. I started out with well pumps, the manuals of which said they could lift water while dry, but the bearings would squeal horrendously. What fails are cycle timers, but every one I had failed in the on position, so the pump runs constantly instead of shutting off entirely.

I use root riots currently and have gotten them down to a science.

I cut 6-10" branches and place into a cup of RO. When I have all I’m taking I strip nodes from the bottom up to the top 2-4, get a plug right from the bag (keep closed always) and cut the end of each branch up to within 1/4-1/2" from a node, sprinkle a bit of rooting powder on the end and node and make sure to insert it so there is at least one node inside the plug. I don’t soak or water the plugs at first.

Put plugs in tray liner, add 1/2" of water to bottom of tray to keep humidity on the bottom of the plugs and keep covered 2 days under low, indirect light. I will place the tray under the canopy in my tent and cover with 60% shade cloth if it’s directly under a light. Otherwise, I set it near my snake cages and get the indirect LED reflection from that. More light makes it take longer and causes yellowing, I never get any yellowing anymore.

After 2 days, crack one vent all the way. Watch for wilting over the next few hours. If they wilt then close the vent and wait another day.

One more day and open the other vent all the way. Watch for wilting.

On the 4th day if there’s still no wilting you can crack the dome and leave a gap. This is when I check to see if the plugs need water for the first time.

On day 5 there are usually roots popping out of half the plugs or more. I take extras and if they take longer than 10days to root I don’t bother babying them anymore. Rabbit food.

I got this from a commercial cloning SOP on another cloning thread on here that was meant for rockwool but it worked perfectly for me in root riots. Only things I changed were the soaking of the plugs and I use powder instead of clonex gel. The big eureka moments in this learning experience were using less water in the media to cause earlier callous development, and not giving them enough light to grow forces them to build roots first.

I would be concerned about feeding clones with rooting powder to the bunnies. Might tend to be a bit carcinogenic if there are still any actives left over. Probably be ok if you just feed the tops. Not sure if the rabbits would absorb and pass it to the snakes, but food for thought.

I never thought about that. Usually I let the clones grow for a month or 2 in .5gal pots and cut it at the stalk before I give them the clones but I probably have thrown a freshly rooted cut or 2 their way before…
