upgraded to 2000ml buchner for filtering ethanol extract. after winterizing, i would like to add ac, ao and celite, making a patty style with another paper on top. question is- what grade paper? was looking at grade 5 and 6 to prevent powder from sucking through. recommendations for paper and how you do filtrate stacks? turns out 185mm paper too big, need 180- some trimming ahead! thanks
Why not use a fritted disc buchner funnel? It will stop all the fines from sneaking through.
A proper celite layer at the bottom of your cake will stop the fines from coming through. I like to use a fritted buchner with a paper over the frit for good measure. Here’s a nice explanation of building a filter cake in your funnel:
what grade of filter?2, 3, 5 or 6? when and how do you use the ao?
thanks
im using a ceramic 2l buchner. if i get another i was thinking about the 4l plastic buchner at torr kitchens. i avoided the fritted disc because i heard they clogged easily and were very hard to clean. im just a home cook, but i am extracting 12lbs at a time using 10 gals pure ethanol- so i have alot to process per batch. making feco and trying to end up with 500ml+ of concentrate
thanks!
really good info!
Consider a panda.
What are you using for solvent recovery (how much of that ethanol do you get back?)
its on short list
i use setup like torr kitchen. vacuum pots, cooled with ca/cl ice water bath.
will have to add port for hose to output of panda…
will try the new torr kitchen cooling radiator/fan- torricane- soon
Oh hey it is my boy Mike I golf with him everyday!
Air cooled condensers are great. Especially when you also need a room heater. Doesn’t look like they skimped on the fan. Which is important because air is a lousy thermal transfer medium unless you get the flow rate up.
Not something I’d pay that much for, but should work for your purposes. I can certainly see the appeal of their “system” for their target demographic (no shade meant).
Not sure I buy their “silicone is better than welding” claims for connecting the tubes in their condenser, sure silicone is compatible with ethanol, but it’s absolutely not compatible with everything you can extract from cannabis using ethanol.
Because you’re not using a reflux still, some of those other compounds WILL make it into the condenser & condensate. (Your nose should tell you your recovered solvent is NOT the same as the 190 EtOH you started with…).
…and maybe I’m wrong. Perhaps silicone IS safer than stainless?
i built several large watercooling setups for gaming pcs with fans and radiators. looked into building one myself but copper tubing not compatible with etoh!
Tell that to the distillery industry!
What it’s not compatible with are likely same molecules that make silicone uncomfortable: “terpenes” as many refer to them. I’m just gonna go with VOC’s
sexy looking stills! jw- why do people use silicone mats to finish their extracts?
Because they are stupid ill informed
