Worse, than that if you can believe

benzene azeotropes with cyclohexane and heptane this much I can find in reference

without going too deep into the journals.

I would expect it to do so in a small amount with butane as well then so just distilling

off the butane to test your gas for benzene may not work.

the separation of cyclohexane from benzene is said to be very difficult.

I would expect other alkanes to be not so easy as well.

maybe using the fact benzene will fluoresce under uv might be the test :slight_smile:

oil and gas are often not made in the same amounts by the

same people.

australia has massive gas reserves but very little in oil.

we sell the stuff to be refined overseas then buy it straight

back like the stupid country that we are.

but when the oil use goes up due to aviation and society starting too

kick again (with a little speculation based on vaccine success
another proof it works) the oil price rises.

butane is not used as much for transport and

as we use more propane there is a butane cut to deal with.

It has been hell to get shipping containers for a year now as

no one is allowed of the ship without two week iso.

but things are starting to be fixed with areas in many countries

for shipping crew to step off and have a break.

there was a time (and probably still is in some places)

were ships just sat out at sea waiting to dock.

and airplanes who use mammoth amounts of fuel were

not flying people around the world.

if the vaccine continues as it has these things for australia

are predicted to be on the mend some time next year.

therefor the price rises on fuel that is used for long

distance travel.

ill use my self as a reference here as I ship containers over seas

with my old man.

remember fuel price is often changing at different times in different

more places are learning to deal with covid so there is

more fuel for transport used.

butane does not change as much due to transport.
(it does too an extent as there are butane mixes of LPG
but not as much so you should see an inverse movement
great hedge if your do that kind of thing hedges industry and
more often than not I would expect it too move in opposition to
other fuels)

I would expect the price of chemicals like some aromatic amines

to go down as they are not used for transport but are

made from crude.

why does an alkane test up as an aromatic ?

I would have thought they had very different retention times.

that may actually be used in defense in some cases in court.

if people are not even able to tell alkanes from aromatic

via gc how can a forensics report be 100% proof.

that is of course if they as you stated have not run standards.

which also means any compound that is not in there standards

library can not be proven in to be what it is in court.

very interesting.

what i really dont like about this situation is there seems to be a number of gas sellers who know exactly which distributor sold the dirty gas but is not sharing the information with the community for fear of being sued it seems. i know tanks are being tested in order to confirm the supply chain but i wish at least the company responsible for this mess would come out by now and pull a recall…

I was definitely surprised but I’ve seen the spectra/library match. It wasn’t perfect by any means but R2 was solidly in the 90s.

I think I posted a link for how to test the gas and the apparatus yo collect the sample if you dont want to just submit a tank of it from the same lot.

For GMP the COA does not have to come from the vendor. You can test in house you just have to have a validated method and release specification. You can also have a third party do the test.

We test everything in my shop. That includes all reagents, gasses, and packaging components including tubes bags and carts. It’s a GMP thing and getting yourself a solid lab to do tgisbwuth is important, I often have a backup lab just for business continuity as well.

There are definitely C6’s in industrial grades of propane, butane and isobutane. There may be some in aerosol grades, which are typically 95% pure. There are no C6+ molecules in any of the instrument grade hydrocarbons produced by Diversified. We ran their C3 and C4’s out 20 minutes.

As expected, the propane was clean with the last peak being n-butane at 5.5 minutes.

The n-butane had trace amounts of trans-2-butene and isopentane that popped at 9.78 and 11.45 minutes respectfully.

The isobutane showed no T-2-butene, but did have a trace amount of isopentane that popped 11.36 minutes. None of the hydrocarbons had any peaks past isopentane. Which is the first C5 to make an appearance in GC analysis.

With regard to benzene, intentionally introducing a carcinogen into a container that will be filled with a solvent used to extract oils for consumption is amoral and likely illegal. Only an idiot would clean a tank with a cancer agent. Shit, I wouldn’t work with any of the BTEX species period.

No good businessperson wants to spend more money than they need to. That said, good hydrocarbons aren’t cheap and cheap hydrocarbons aren’t good. Industrial butane is trading today at at $1.31 a gallon. That’s 0.27 a pound. A company selling this shit into the industry at even half the prices legit companies charge for quality hydrocarbons would make a killing - but it’s all dirty money. Such a supplier might even price their hydrocarbons slightly lower than legit companies to create the illusion that their gas is good, but they are sensitive to market pricing and want to offer good deals.

Whether you buy from us or not, be careful out there and take steps to ensure you aren’t being duped.

I’ve always redistilled my refill gas through a clean vessel and there’s always nasty shit left over… Ecogreen is never really clean. So it’s no surprise to me that there would be funky shit in any refill can… No matter where or who it comes from.

The last time I questioned a clearly bull-shit analysis on this forum, the company that provided it changed the report to make it more in-line with what it should be reporting. I tried to educate forum members of the fraud and wound up helping the charlatans do a better job deceiving people.

Most F4200 members don’t want to / need to know the ins-and-outs of the gas business, but sadly that makes them easy prey for bull-shitters.

There are good and bad suppliers but this isn’t the proper venue for me to cause problems by being critical of others. If you have questions about your supplier - shoot me a message - I’ll share what I know and you can make your own decisions.
