A guide to making your own membrane skid for not very much money

Anyone tried these?

I had a whole box of them drop into my lap to play around with. Cut one open and soaked in denatured etoh seems to be ok but I am just getting started on this stuff - still piecing everything together. Total newb.

I’m not familiar with those ones. Interested to see how they work for you. I would try doing a conditioning process of running water, then half water half solvent, then just solvent. It seems to get better speeds for RO-types.

If you have the housing for it I can send you one to try if interested.

I just got started diving into this over the weekend so it’ll be awhile before I’m actually using anything. Was going to try to transplant one of these skids:

… but unfortunately they installed them and then epoxy’d the bastards in place so I think I’ll start with a single housing to get my bearings before scaling up.

Would a CRN4 or 5 work for pump you think? Trying to work with what’s around me but I’ll order something if I have to. Not sure if these are overkill.

Do the membranes you get come with writing on the actual membrane itself inside the bag?? Seems odd.

Normally, yeah they have serial codes printed, or else a sticker. But in regards to the pump, I know nothing about it. What’s it’s maximum pressure?

Looks like 232 or 362psi output depending on connection

I also have a couple of these that say they go to 1000psi:

By my reckoning, it seems like it only says it does 75 psi differential, while the other number is just the burst rating. But i’ve never seen that pump before.

Maybe that’s why they have 2 of them on the same skid? Would that get to 150 differential or am I looking at this wrong?

Ok, so maybe you can tell me if I’m reading this right. This one would give me 225psi differential? Would that be enough to start on a single membrane / housing?

I’ve got a bunch of these hsro-4040-ff membranes if you’re interested in trying, too.

Stoked to see this progress…

Hopefully they work well, that’s a lot!

I would say 225 is super low… you’d be better with a pump that can at least do 600.

If I send you one or two - would you show the results?

Willing to trade for spoons.

Unfortunately, as I posted recently, I lost my test facility and am in limbo. Maybe @Lincoln20XX ? Or @thesk8nmidget ?

Shit, forgot about that. Too bad you aren’t east coast - I may have been able to help.

Same offer goes to @Lincoln20XX and @thesk8nmidget or whoever else is capable. All I ask is for is a push in the right direction in return.

If nothing pans out in 5-6 weeks I’m happy to attempt to run those for yah.

Appreciate it!

Can you get an idea if I just sent a single or you’d need a few?

We’re just talking the membranes right? Or were you wondering about the pumps.

In terms of membranes I’m not sure how quickly they would condition to a solvent. So I could run the test on an alkane or alcohol of your choice, but would need to replace it if you wanted to try a different one to get proper data.

I’m just talking membranes. I don’t think the pumps are going to generate enough pressure unless I can run a few of them to get to where I need to be? I have a ton of different booster pumps at my disposal but nothing alone that goes to 600psi+. Going to take a harder look over the next few days and see if I can dig up a proper pump before biting the bullet and ordering one.

Sounds good, I could peel a couple off for science.

I don’t think you could pair them.

Likely, these will only work with ethanol/methanol

Ethanol is all I’m looking to do with them at the moment. I’m seeing those Hydracell D10s for about $1k / $1.5k - not bad.

If I can’t find one in our stock this week I’ll probably go ahead and order one and set something similar up to what you did in the first post here to play around with.

I have some fiberglass housings around at the double membrane length. Pressure needs are the same no matter how many membranes you pair?

As a rule, I’m happy to help with such things, but I don’t have any plans to run ethanol in the immediate future, perhaps later in September once we’ve got things humming
