A guide to making your own membrane skid for not very much money

If you pair your winterizing membranes properly, you can use run them passively off the residual pressure of the system. We are focused on developing a truly continuous system… drop biomass into a hopper, get out your desired product. We are a bit off, but getting closer. We’re currently to the point where we can go from packed bags to NF, water washed crude or distillate. The first and last steps to a totally continuous system are next for us to work on.

Yeah hydracell is self priming… As you can see it boots dry and pulls the fluid uphill in the pictures i showed. Although, indeed, the feed tube is much larger than the output in this installation.

Our pumps run 1 or 2 housings each, on all systems but our small 50. They can be programmed to compensate if 1 fails. They all usually run under 20hz during normal operation.

That was my thought also! He’s definitely going up MOM next month! And when it comes time to narrow down the MOM of the year, I have no doubt that he should be on that also! The info he’s dropped will help many people wanting to do this, but being financially strapped. More people doing it, the more information we have, and the further we can ALL GO! Dont worry about cutting into your market share, legends open source for the good of the community and industry, and they will be remembered as such.

More information:

Membranes are sold according to their diameter, and are named in this fashion: XXYY (Inches diameter, inches length) - so the 8040 are 8 inches in diameter (it’s X.X), and 40 inches long. When combining membranes in a row in a single housing, lengths are combined, so a housing that can hold two 8040s is called an 8080.

The common sizes are 2540, 4040, and 8040. Some vendors sell very small 1812 elements.

These sizes are only nominal and depending on brand they may differ, so it’s possible for a certain 2540 membrane for instance, to not fit in a 2540 housing. You need to actually know the real diameter.

So if you order a 2540 housing, get a specification sheet for it and when you go to order a membrane, ask the people “will it fit in this housing” – fortunately, in a lot of cases vendors are willing to roll them differently to fit in your specific housing.

In my earlier days, I used Thomasnet to find membrane vendors, and if you don’t know this site, it’s a great way to find any sort of industrial equipment or parts.

I’ll be dumping some data on membranes I have used in the past soon for anyone who wants to move forward and hit the ground running on this – but what i’d really really like to see is people sourcing their own, so we can diffuse efforts to find the best vendors. I can’t test all of them alone! There are probably 100 vendors if not more, and I say i’ve scratched the surface.

One thing I’d also like to say is

BE FUCKING CAREFUL

DON’T build a system without a PRV, at 150 psi I watched a 6 rack closed loop go through the roof of a facility (@Dred_pirate can attest to this he watched the video with me at the last mjbizzcon glg event)

600 psi and you’d probably go through several walls, and an explosion with fiberglass housing could be detrimental

Just remember you’re working with high pressures, 20 psi can destroy a building and kill you imagine what 600 psi would do to a housing…

It could be a missle or fragmention grenade

Should hopefully be posting some results from that Zaiput unit soon… another membrane based technology but for a totally different purchase. Unfortunately a variety of mechanical issues and I haven’t had sufficient time to troubleshoot them. But stay tuned!

If you wanted to get started on winterization, you could do worse than the following membrane, the DN3000 from Permionics. The following result was obtained on my test skid running at 5C, 7 gpm crossflow, 125 psi. The permeation rate was ~0.5 L/min. So you could do about 30 L/hr on a single housing test skid like i showed here. From the color remediation, you can see you’d certainly take a lot of burden off of media when going for extreme color removal.

Haven’t used it much since we last talked a few months ago. But was using a random ro filter from amazon to do solvent recovery of methanol when I last used it.

I haven’t ordered any other membranes though.
