Your opinion on sight glass

Just had a critical blow out on my new system. Sight glass broke, sprayed shit everywhere (thank God for a safe setup). What’s everyone’s opinion on glass? Right now I’m removing all from my system.

I only use a flat sight glasses on my collection. And mine are polycarbonate. Those column style are unsafe its for looking at beer or milk, not pressurized flammable gas, also the temp changes when freezing and using dry ice are obviously hard on glass.

Hit up @Killa12345. He’s got all you’ll need. Just curious, how did that chip happen? Did the extractor fall over? Did you let cold solvent touch it? @Eeeugene
I’m glad all are safe. More oil can be made.

Hope all is well sir,

Hi,
Tubular sight glasses are some of the weakest out there as far as design. Switch to metaglas , you’ll be much safer.

Never quite understood why they sell poly carb sight windows?

For vapor they may work, any splashes would contaminate the batch and degrade the sight glass.

I’ve had 360 view sightglasses fail when I ran cold solvent a few times. I used to use them on the bottom of my dewax to know when the run is done but the cold and nitro assist would either make them leak or crack. I only use them on top now where there will only be vapor present

Those are sold for other tri clamp applications like juice factories and shit like that. Bozos have decided to sell them to unsuspecting/ignorant victims in our industry for the almighty :dollar:

I always preferred the cross-style ones like this:

Listen to your tank :ear::ear:no sight glass needed.

No impact happened, I believe it was from the cold. Tube was half filled with liquid 70/30 when it split and sprayed everywhere. Thank God for a large workspace and no ignition sources nearby.

Where was the sight glass placed on the system?

Where did you get the sight glass from?

looks like vertical crush damage on that sight glass.
your system isnt a big tower is it?

Lower part of system. No its not a big tower its a rack system. I’m betting it was the cold. Either way I removed it and one from the other tube just in case. Now it’s all steel. Wasnt really a point in having them anyways. Just cool to see the flow I guess.

How cold? Was it pressurized?

Dry ice cold. Cold solvent cold. It had around 20lbs of pressure.

Damn I hate that. I run mine cold after dewax at 30psi way to often.
