Yes I wasn’t posting it to shit on anyone preference either just to bring light to a topic many refuse to acknowledge
It’s still going down like that just not many doing it correctly. My entire rounds are grown in regenerative living soil, fed ferments, and go straight into a -80c freezer 20 mins after they are chopped. All tane is properly distilled before extraction and the extract only touches stainless and glass. no crc and I don’t use extraction socks. Badder, Diamonds, carts are all top tier live. It’s as single source as it gets
What about gaskets and thread tape? Throw in plastic lids on jars and I’d bet there are microplastics in just about every cannabis product that gets to a consumer. That being said I also prefer hydrocarbon extracts when they are made well from quality plant material.
Its microplastics all the way down. You get them everywhere, all the time. There is no escape. Grabbed a k-cup? Microplastics. Microwave popcorn? PFAS up the wazoo. Drink some water from plastic bottle? Well hope you like some TPA in your colon. Don’t get me started on cars and roads/asphalt.
I’ve seen silicone grease from glass joints slowly dissolve into distillate batches, along with ptfe grease. I met someone who proposed using d9 as joint grease and I never looked back. I’ve seen PTFE tape slowly erode into batches. Nylon isn’t really heat stable at rosin pressing temperatures so it will inevitably break down as well.
Those fancy glass ball jars have the lowest quality gaskets you can imagine, which definitely contaminate product.
At some point, you need to accept that the world is constantly poisoning you to some degree or another. This is an accepted and unavoidable reality of life. Poison is in the dose, and we need to look at the orders of magnitude between cannabis microplastics and daily dose exposures.
This is true but minimizing it as much as possible is key but pressing hash into plastic bags combined with solvents(terpenes) heat and high psi is by no means making a cleaner extract. It would be great to get actual side by side lab results done but I don’t know what lab can do those tests. Haven’t dived into it really though been slammed with work and new projects
The rosin guys I was talking to were adamant that there was no way that it was even possible for micro plastics to come off into the extract from the bags but there science plays by its own rules
I agree, I am not a fan of the way rosin has been marketed. If your product’s greatest strength is an alleged weakness of your competition then how strong of a product do you really have?
No press and seal or cling wrap on the pans after pouring?
Everyone seems pretty happy to fill pctg/pctt disposables which leach too, Alex eckman did a presentation about it yesterday
I haven’t really thought about the whole microplastics in Rosin thing, but it makes a ton of sense. Definitely bringing that up next time i hear someone shitting on BHO hahaha.
Washing and pressing with sintered stainless steel has got to be a thing, right?
No pour straight out of a honey pot into Pyrex and then whip on a hot plate or glass jars going into a miner. Also switch out any mason jar lids for stainless ones.
funny a few things. well when i make rosin i use a silk bag with silk thread holding together. so is it a plastic from other type rosin bags ? or the oil slick paper or both ? lol oils if done right i would not think would off gas much. but i guess they would some. i mostly smoke buds. but i do have hashes and oils around. i make and like dry sift. machine i made is s/s screens. also like scissor hash a lot. as for the micro plastics i am fucked bought pot in baggies for years lol.
Ethanol over butane? That’s definitely a first.
I really wish Alex published his/the team’s findings, or at very least just post online. He also worked with faculty that are not saying anything or publishing anything. Please correct me if I’m wrong, because I am on his side and want to see the end of shitty plastics and unethical material compatibility choices. Instagram is not a scientific journal.
Edit:
Breaking News! Rosin microplastics makes you gay.
Not sure if I should make it italics or not…
Are you sure its not nylon silk?
no there real silk. took some looking to find.
Back in 2019/2020, my team and I made some real clean ethanol extracts. They were some of the best concentrates I’ve ever had. Haven’t really found anything of similar quality since moving on from that job, and the MSO that bought the company converted everything to hydrocarbon. But yes, in order I prefer rosin/ethanol/BHO.
I thought the same thing lol. I mean you can post-process the shit out of them to make a “clean” extract (which is what the post is about I guess, so it makes sense), but yeah I have never had an ethanol extract I liked the taste of, without adding some sort of flavor/terps.
but to each his own!
yes, the primary source of the plastics is the pressing bags.
you got a link for (non-nylon) silk bags?!
This makes me think you have not had good BHO. Ethanol concentrates are the bottom of the barrel imo. I would even select CO2 concentrates over Ethanol.
Yeah man, you could be right. I haven’t had a lot of BHO because the times I had it I wasn’t impressed. I’m happy to have my mind changed but I’m not really going out of my way nowadays to get concentrates since I’m more of a joint guy anyway.
