Why cbd nulls thc effects (eufory/high)

It looks as a high cbd content,
(In low doses along with thc gives a subjective feeling of increased and more enjoyable high)
nulls the thc typically desired effects on recreational weed…
Thats becouse its a good rescue tool for been higher than desired.
Am I right?
Ok.
So, why this happens? Is it becouse they compite for the same receptors?
Is so:
Does this mean that delta-8-THC doesn’t have, when combined with delta-9-THC a synergistic comulative effect?
Does it gives “more” in a recreational way, 20 mg delta-9 than ( 20 of delta 9 +10 mg of delta 8 )? or this last will conduce always to a more potent high?
(very ignorant in this neuro thing field)

I am not sure where this came from but I have seen many budtenders/retailers pushing along this idea, and it can be dangerous for first time users assuming that everything will be alright if they just slap some CBD on top of it if it goes too far, and it will “rescue” you.

For me personally as someone with an unlimited supply of CBD and no THC tolerance I can say it doesn’t work at all. I have tried multiple times to no effect with various dosages.

I’m sure mileage may vary but it seems like something irresponsible and bad for business to promote

I’d say it’s quite the opposite. I can’t get proper high untill there is a substancial amount of CBD with my THC.

I believe that the truth behind this is that CBD helps your body modulate the THC in your system, allowing you to “feel less high”, when in reality you are just receiving a more regulated and manageable amount of THC.

Imagine a single switchboard operator redirecting calls as they come in, now imagine calls are THC entering your system. In manageable doses the single operator has no problem redirecting calls, and for some people this single operator is capable of heroic feats and can handle whatever comes their way. But for others the operator becomes overwhelmed giving a sense of fear, paranoia or anxiety. Now imagine CBD is a whole team of switchboard operators showing up to help out. This team is good at what they do and they get shit straightened out in a hurry. Sending calls where they need to go at exactly the right time. There aren’t less calls coming in, they are just being handled better.

Reason for that is that CBD functions as a negative allosteric modulator, which means that CBD binds to a site on the CB1 receptor distinct from the THC binding site.
This attachment causes the receptor site where THC binds to change the shape of the receptor which creates a lesser binding of THC and less activation of the CB1 receptor.

Thats the theory.

In practice its way more complex as CBD also interacts with many more receptors and enzymes who all contribute to the “high” of THC like CYP2C9, GABA-A, 5-HT1A. It all depends on the size of the CBD dose, the cannabinoid ratio, the time each was taken ect.

CBD 100% evaporates any head high effects of THC while also reducing or eliminating anxiety effects from certain THC strains that are prone to causing it, anecdotally of course.

It is very hard even begin to start thinking about how CBD affects a THC high. Every person has their own endocannabinoid system that plays greatly into the effects of THC and CBD. Not to mention each persons tolerance and how their body processes or doesn’t process cannabinoids. For someone to say they can just take a heaping dose of THC and then a big dose of CBD to “counterbalance” is absolutely insane. This doesn’t work for everyone and if it does work for you there are other factors at play here.

@AppalachianExtractor this is a cute way to put it but I assure you this isn’t the way it goes down.

I was always under the assumption that the relationship between THC and cannabinoids was similar to that of caffeine and L-theanine where the latter helps curb the negative effects of larger doses of the former.

Comparing the two molecules could be good in theory but what really happens to one person could be polar opposite for others. I know people who take CBD to go to bed. If I took CBD before I went to sleep I wouldn’t sleep at all. People process things so differently its impossible to say this works for me so it will work for you. The amount of food and water you had to drink that day could also be playing a role in how the CBD effects the THC in your system. Did you eat a lot of fats, carbs, mixture of both? All these can play a role in how your body processes and absorbs cannabinoids. Not to mention terps and their effects if you’re smoking/dabbing flower/concentrates. I’m not saying that CBD can’t curb the effects of THC, it probably can, just to say that it is black or white is a serious underestimation of how the human body and brain work.

Hey, CosmicB, that discussion of allosteric inhibition of CB1 caught my attention…,have you a citation you could share?

So you’re saying CBD does nothing to help modulate THC?

Well no… I kinda explained that in my other posts.

The last 3 nights, I’ve been dabbing thc distillate, with sauce/sugar, dipped into cbd isolate powder. It’s a more mellow high, vs intense. Plus helps for my migraines.

CBD attaches to the same receptor that THC does. When you consume CBD it is going to latch to those receptors and make less room for THC to attach. But this is the same for THC, so it leads me to believe knowing this, and from my own experience, that whatever you smoke first and in dominant amounts will determine how you feel. This meaning that if you are already too high from excess THC, CBD might help but the THC has already binded to these receptors preventing as much CBD entering. I think people are assuming it has a “sobering” effect, like doing coke when your drunk. If you want those benefits from CBD, it seems like you need to consume CBD first or with THC to allow it to block the THC from fully binding to those receptors and allowing the CBD to even out the effects. I think of it like staying hydrated while drinking. If you make a mixed drink but dilute it halfway with water, it will mean your consuming less alcohol per sip and allowing yourself to stay slightly more hydrated which also prevents you from getting as drunk as fast. But if you get drunk THEN try to hydrate, youll still be drunk and need to drink a few bottles of water to rehydrate. As much as you would like to think slamming back two bottles of water will sober you up faster, at that point all that will help is time.

binds to the same receptor, in a different location…

We propose a putative allosteric binding site that is located in the N-terminal region of receptor, partially overlapping the orthosteric binding site. Molecular dynamics simulations reveled a coordinated movement involving the outward rotation of helixes 1 and 2 and subsequent expansion of the orthosteric binding site upon cannabidiol binding. Finally, changes in the cytoplasmic region and high helix 8 mobility were related to impaired receptor internalization. Together, these results offer a possible explanation to how cannabidiol can directly modulate effects of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol on the cannabinoid receptor type 1

Great summary of the correct mechanism for this phenomenon.

Due to genetic diversity effecting the amount and action of certain enzymes, this effect will be more noticeable to some and not others.

Smoking cbd bubble hash makes even the best weed feel pointless afterward. I can barely tell it from hemp.

I have the same experience if I take cbd before or with thc, but if I load up on thc and then dose the cbd 15-30min later I melt into the couch. Huge body relaxation and I seem to keep my thc high.

Only small doses of cbd will reduce thc effects, it is subjective to a persons tolerance levels and should not be offered as a remedy for noobs greening out.

in my exp once your past 30-50mg of cbd it will increase the couchlock effects of thc
