I remember being a young stoner in the early seventies when the Colombian red and the Acapulco gold we occasionally got on the East Coast made a lot of us consistently giggle and laugh. It was $40 an ounce retail when the Colombian mother ships used to run the bales of buds up the East Coast.
I stopped smoking in the early eighties for professional reasons (heavy testing, polygraphs.) Now that I have retired I have tried several of the modern cannabis strains and wow, they are strong. pungent and too sedating. No giggles, no laughs from anyone in the room. I guess the indica and ruderalis genes took all the laughs away.
I will keep occasionally trying to chase that mellow energetic funny seventies high. This couchlock aināt my thing.
I think all around my memories of such are fond and full of friends good conversation and laughter, especially when there was weed around. Perhaps carefree humor just comes with the times.
sometimes life changes, I feel somewhat removed from what I used to be.
thats my take.
The weed in the 70ās was landrace strains. Barneys Farm seeds has Acapulco Gold, but good luck getting an equatorial sativa to EVER finish. Acapulco Gold was well, gold because they let outdoor cure in the sun. Nobody does that anymore. Everything now are hybrids and doesnāt have the same effect.
Good luck in your pursuit.
EDIT: Barneyās Farm hybridized Acapulco gold so it is 70% sativa, 30% indica. Itās not a true landrace and was probably crossed with an Afghani that was prevalent in Mexican weed.
Thereās still some good sativas out there. If you are growing I have a Colombian cross as well as a Malawi cross that you might like. I would be happy to mail you a few seeds.
My own personal favorite strain right now is ā1980s OGā that I got in trade. It is a worked selection of bag seed kush from the 80s. Iām sure it wouldnt test amazingly high, but it makes me want to get up and do stuff.
You nailed it, weed back then was less potent and concentrates (save for old school hash) were much less prevalent. Your āholy shit iāve been smoking doinks all day longā high is about on par with āgod damn I just took 2 big dabsā high
I have tried four five strains from dispensaries.
Two or three puffs hit me like quaaludes did. (A seventies drug). I guess stronger isnāt necessarily better for an old head.
I grew some plants from the Colombian seeds in the mid seventies. They actually reached 8 ft tall by late Sept and flowered. What we were told back then was to stick pins in the bottom of the plant to stress it out so it would make more resin. We covered the males with trash bags to catch the male pollen because supposedly it could be made into blonde hash. The females budded nice flowers but they had seeds. We didnāt know about sinsemilla then. The weed was weak even by seventies standards. Just not enough tropical sun power.
I was actually pretty surprised how strong weed is after taking my first tolerance break and then trying to smoke again how I normally would. I prefer concentrates and had to take little baby dabs to get my tolerance up to a comfortable level again.
Are you actually taking little puffs? Iād take a hit in size up to the point that you can comfortably inhale/exhale without coughing, and donāt hold it in. Once your tolerance gets up you should be able to smoke however you want.
One of my og buddies always tells me about old school sativas, they would call them āno ceilingā strains that he claims are now rare due to all the hybrids grown today. Apparently they called it that because the high, but I also found it funny they all sounded like tall sativas that took a long time and didnāt yield too well, but the high was their favorite.
Iāll ask my buddy what heās into now
I remember trying laughing buddha from Barneyās and it was quite a nice sativa to smoke back in the day. Talking about sativas what about Kali Mist? At one point it was the sativa to grow. I know that commercially most sativas are not viable due to extended flowering but thinking of making one run just for myself. Where Iām at clones are not a thing but any seed recommendation would be appreciated.
I have a 100 day THCv strain from Humboldt Seed company that rivals Durban Poison from back in the day.
Using male pollen to make hash and nails to poke stems? Yikes. That sounds like āBro Scienceā gone mad. My male plants are killed and the females are treated like royalty until they bless us with flower. Growing habits have definitely changed.
Mycotic, I believe you and I are about the same age, ( I graduated high school in 1970). Iāve been smoking daily since '71. Iāve managed to stay just a little bit higher on the employment level to avoid testing. I donāt think the reefer has changed much, but Life tends to step in to temper oneās emotions. It happens in slow and subtle ways through the birth and death of friends, parents, and children, etc. The close friendships we have when we are young are very difficult to replicate as we age. Our inhibitions are more intractable and less easy to shed as we feel we have more to lose by being vulnerable. Without that vulnerability, itās impossible to laugh with the abandon you remember.
When I was 18 the whole world was young. War/Anti-war sentiment was raging in this country. The Revolution was going to start any day. Television held no interest. The action was happening in the street. The Park was our internet; the underground press was our Twitter. It was a different time, my friend; we were together then. The youth subculture that existed was gone by 1974. America was profoundly changed during that time. I doubt weāre likely to see anything like that again.
Welcome to the future @essiyote! You make some great points, and I can definitely identify with them. I definitely feel that tolerance has a lot to do with it, but also, as we journey on our path and learn to suppress the effects of the smoke to blend in with non smokers, we may be unconsciously training ourselves to experience less of the high, therefore eliminating the giggles from the experience.
