US House Health Committee on Energy and Commerce Considering 6 Bills to Legalize Marijuana

The US House Health Subcommittee on Energy and Commerce conversed for 3.5 hours on January 15, 2020, “to consider six bills that offer a range of solutions to update federal policy and advance research on cannabis and it’s compounds,” said Anna Eshoo (Chairwoman). The director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIH) expressed that rescheduling marijuana “may indeed accelerate research,” but echoed of the law of unintended consequences. “The states are way ahead of where we are federally,” said Representative Greg Walden (Oregon). The Senior policy advisor to the Diversion Control Division (DEA), stated the agency is moving “expeditiously” to craft regulations that remove barriers to research and expand the number of licensed cultivators.
