Make the rosin from bubble hash, decarb it in a small sealed jar. You lose a little bit of taste, but, as long as the flower was good it will still taste amazing. Using the appropriate mesh size bag on the right fractions of water hash will minimize the amount of waxes in the rosin.
If you’re using pristine hash rosin you can get it to be clean enough that it may work in a cartridge but this also typically involves mechanical separation and is not something that the everyday beginner is going to be capable of doing. If you are using flower rosin, you are forced to resort to additives which are never going to be ideal but that’s the trade-off if you are going to insist on using an improperly refined extract. You’re always better off using a cleaner oil like distillate, winterized CO2, etc but not everyone has that available to them.
This is where MCT oil and terpenes come into the conversation but one thing people misunderstand is that not all terpenes are going to keep decarbed rosin homogenous. If you go with a regular monoterpene-heavy blend that’s all limonene (like most retail terpene blends) then it’s going to run into issues very quickly. I have a few theories as to why this is but lighter weight blends of terpenes do not hold up well when it comes to keeping decarbed extracts flowing. You don’t need to go all out with something like the flavorless terpene blends like ours but realistically you can achieve the same effect by piecing together a basic blend of some less volatile terpenes based on what you do or don’t want to put into your body. I obviously use bisabolol, phytol, nerolidol etc which works well but you can honestly get similar results for rosin just using a common sesquiterpene like beta-caryophyllene. It will impact the taste much more but if you’re looking for the cleanest way and most affordable way to do it, beta-caryophyllene is pretty much the safest bet. Even if you used a blend that was predominantly things like beta-caryophyllene, nerolidol, etc you will have better results than a fruity limonene-heavy blend.
MCT is the other thing people try to do since it’s the same concept as using a heavier terp but for some reason if MCT is mixed with waxy extracts like rosin it will just taste smokey/burnt. MCT oil based rosin carts end up tasting like barbeque sauce. I wish I was kidding.
I’d dial in rosin before trying to put it in carts personally. Gotta have decent starting materials.
