The list of compounds in cannabis that might work as diluents is not small. I’d estimate 20-30 sure things, not all terpenes.
Are they safe at diluent levels? Search me…
Raber from the Werc shop is standing behind his phytol diluent being safe. So that’s good. If your industrial quality flavor product needs industrial quality diluent, awesome.
While the Werc Shop was still in WA (2014-2015) I worked in their analytical and flavor chemistry lab. While phytol may have some longer term effects when consumed in larger quantities, I can personally say that I have probably smoked more phytol diluted vapes than most on this forum with no ill side effects. I operate under a different philosophy these days, but I still do believe that there is significant anecdotal evidence that many of these compounds don’t pose any immediate risk to consumers. Long term, who knows.
I was at the Bellevue spot. That’s where the analytical lab was and where we did most of the flavor dev and cannabis research. It was a really solid introduction to the cannabis industry not gonna lie. Summer of 2015 I got to meet and work with Dr. Jahan Marcu and all the other folks that went on to form the cannabis chemistry subdivision of the ACS.
No clue why they’re acting like they invented some new groundbreaking formula. Doesn’t take a team of phd’s to come up with this so flexing their credentials looks kind of ridiculous. Phytol has been a diluent for other companies for years. Even they have been selling phytol for years as an isolate but clearly they never put 2 and 2 together. IIRC floraplex used it in one of theirs recently too. Looks like they just saw other people used it for this and easy enough to market because it occurs in cannabis. They didn’t test anything they just sprinkled some other fake terps on top to make it look special.
Maybe they can release the old formula since the reason it was proprietary was so no one would copy them, with their new formula being public they can release the old one now
Seems to be that True Terpenes wasn’t selling Mineral Oil after all- The OLCC- Just dropped this today.
Bulk Naturals LLC., dba True Terpenes, sold Viscosity that solely contained squalene, squalane, and an unidentified olive extract to OLCC recreational marijuana licensees between at least January 2018 and November 2019. Squalene is a “botanically-derived terpene”.
I never used it personally but I never thought it was mineral oil.
The problem is that this “unidentified olive oil extract” is all heavy paraffins and actually no different then mineral oil. So although yes it it derived from olives, on paper it is a long list of unidentified heavy alkanes that have been long linked to lipoid pneumonia. What they were using was actually just a cheaper alternative to squalene containing basically all the mystery hydrocarbons from the olive oil fractionation process. Look up “olive oil unsaponifiables”. It’s a cosmetic product made to be cheaper than squalene with less price fluctuation. They did use squalene and/or Squalane for some time initially as confirmed by members here but they switched to the “mineral oil” like alternative in winter 2019. Why they switched is unknown. Lower cost or perhaps a mistake as some suppliers market it as squalene or a squalene oil (even though it does not actually contain any).
With that said, I find it extremely unlikely anyone would actually develop lipoid pneumonia from the levels they recommended people used it at. So a lot of this is irrelevant at this point. I do think they could have been more open about what it really was rather than arguing up and down it was terpenes when they were knowingly using the cheaper squalene alternative (that contained no amount of squalene, squalane, or any identifiable terpene for that matter). A lot of the same exact things that showed up on the so called “mineral oil” test results that showed up here are also the waxy impurities we remove during winterization. There’s a lot we don’t know about vaporizing this stuff but one thing we do know now is high molecular weight oils have no place in this. The heaviest constituents in your oil should be cannabinoids.
That’s not what the “experts” said when I posted the chromatography of their product on here when I had it tested and it took then 3 weeks to clean their machine out
Pretty sure Ben still has his. But he blocked me 3+ years ago, after I posted their MSDS sheets that showed the terpenes were held in a proprietary suspension & not “Organic Steam Distilled”
Also @Tom do you know him? Because that is so fucking fitting I could cry
