Trim vs. nug run?

So, I was wondering everyone thoughts or experience of trim vs. nug run! I’m leaning towards they yeild damn near the same when run! While I’ve come across producers who think if they give a processor nugs they should be getting a hug return, cuz they are nugs! But, from all the runs I’ve done, it’s seems to be hype to recoup having to run flower vs. selling the flower. Curious on your thoughts! (And I’m talking good trim not full of sun leaf ect)

That’s bc good growers trim is covered! And probably good trimmers not sending bs!

My trim gets damn near the same, agreed and can’t tell difference in the extract at all!

But if you have crappy plants w no sugar over leaves then possibly

I believe that! A trichome is a trichome! Either there are a lot or a little! (Size and shape of trichome is a whole other topic)

most people aren’t growing so they can have it ran into BHO. Usually when people try to give me nugs it’s because something went wrong with the grow and they can’t sell the flower as is so they try to recoup by having it blasted. That kind of flower doesn’t yield very well and usually isn’t even as good as a nice trim run.

If the plant was healthy though then running nugs makes a difference for sure. Better yield, higher terp ratio and less waxes in my experience.

I actually see more wax in flower! But some strains are more waxy then others! But yes that was kind of the point of the post, most nug runs are a mishap…but, for example buying lbs of flower for 1k to blast is silly! It will not return enough to validate a price tag of a g! Unless you out slagging g’s all day! And I’ve never seen any real difference in the many runs I’ve done…my record is actually 226gs of a little over 2# of trim!

Nugs if it is for something like mold remediation. That can happen after the grow went good.

But if the nugs are good, you sell the nugs.

For a while we were buying packs and running it for our in house brand. I ended up doing a bunch of side by side runs of trimmed flower ready for retail and the actual trim from those flowers. The flower always yielded better usually around 5-8%. We were seeing returns of 12%-15% on the trim and 20-22% on the flower. Flower also had better clarity but not always better color. It could have just been placebo but I felt like the high was better from the nug runs, longer lasting with less of a burnt out after effect.

In the end it wasn’t worth it to keep buying flower because the margins were way lower than trim run but I do miss having access to endless nug run dabs.

Yeah those are about the numbers I see…but 5-8% is not worth it imo! I see trim return over 20% a lot! But good trim not some bs some send to the glue factory! :joy: some just don’t police thier material that well!..until you charge per pound run!

You can only extract whats there to begin with. Ive ran nugs that only yielded 9%, your just an extractor not a magician and that is a very hard conversation to have. Test it for porency before tou run it for 2 reasons to back up what you say and to see how good your process is.

Potency test are too all over the board here in Oregon. For example a producer I know just switched testing labs and would ya know all his tests came back in the 30’s% this time. So idk if the could trust that as a baseline.

Economically it is more viable for a manufacturer to buy $100 #'s of Trim that test in the 8-14% range as opossed to 500-$1k flower.

I fully agree!

I still buy nug to run but I only run an oz maybe a qp. People dont buy it very much because it’s at 40 a gram. @Mastercoolkeif sounds like you got a killer trim plug

I have some people who bring amazing trim! But kinda few to the many who bring some meh! Haha… I don’t do % trade so people learn to get the boo boo out. I also believe some strains have better trichomes for extracting. I feel like have noticed the more purple the strain(I’m taking real purple not cold purple) return is less. Not sure if others have noticed that? Or I could just be grasping for science correlations. Haha

The purple strains have always been know to have less HP round my parts. I always buy 1# up front then run it to know what my return will be on the lot.

So I’m not crazy?! :joy: well probably a little!

I’ve had the same results getting low yield from running purple strains like purple urkle and kurple compared to other strains at similar potencies pre extraction.

with mid- flower prices at 3-30 cents per gram here in wa, it really makes no difference.

a buddy I know regularly picks up 6-800 lbs at 4 cents per.

nug run is where every flooded market should be lol.

compact the trim and sell it for dog treats :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Outdoor stuff that isn’t trimmed well…I plan on extracting mine this fall. Might extract most of the outdoor grow.

In Maine we are going to have an tax on the wholesale side, so bud sold for extraction might be called “trim”.

The excise tax on marijuana sold to other licensees is:

  • $335 per pound of marijuana flower or mature marijuana plants;
  • $94 per pound of marijuana trim;
  • $1.50 per immature marijuana plant or seedling; and
  • $0.30 per marijuana seed.

We still get over a g a pound here in Oregon…so still not worth it here
