Tricks of the trade

I read in a diy home improvement book that you can modify a bathroom vanity with no top to be a tool bench or work space. You could put a solid oak door as the topper and reinforce the bottom with trusses.

I take big cuts so I use the cloner collar as extra support at transplant time from the TurboKlone ……

Reinforce the top with trusses?

Thank you :octopus::sweat_smile:

There was a site back in the day that had plans to build a computer desk with the free shipping products from usps

I made the desk it lasted about 2 months

Baahahahhahahahahahhaha!!!

Seriously FUCK BVV

I totalled everything it would be around 418$ give or take 80$ to make that system that they’re selling for over 1k.

Besides the stainless panel that everything is mounted to everything is rather cheap.

Scratch that, you can get two electrical panel enclosures and drill holes in them and mount everything accordingly into the enclosures and then mount the enclosure onto a wall or a makeshift mounting rack.

Ever thought about how nice it’d be to have a c1d1 rated beadbath? Is that even a thing?

40$ worth of copper pipe/fittings, some run some tubing to a lab circulator, throw some beads on it and you’re in business.

…obviously you want the circ outside the c1d1 and run the lines through your normal sealed wall penetrations

Retracted for bad wording.

Perfect for All kinds of fun in the lab

Do you ever use them to put jars of solvent and oil to crystallize in as opposed to an oven?

That’s for Pan-crashing or helping keep the off-gas after pour moving prior to going into the oven (rather than having the butane volatilizing causing it to drop temp so far that it just sits and sits. I could jar crash there but I run miners so no need. I’ll post up a pic of it set-up.

Beads are like $100 a lb

Do you use the normal stainless bath beads?

Yeah those beads are stupid expensive. I got a beadbath (a lab armor one we use outside the c1d1) along w/ 8L of beads a lab fridge and a precision scale for $600. It was an odd grouping of items to have together in the same lot, but I wasn’t complaining about the price, and the minifridge is perfect for terp storage. I also got a Flammable/Hazardous Material rated ultralow freezer for $500!!! Man sometimes you can find some straight come-ups at auctions. Shit was all brand-new and unused, still in or on factory wrap/skids.

I didn’t have enough beads left after filling up the actual unit to fully fill the ghetto-bath so I grabbed some bulk copper coated steel shot bb’s. you can get 10k bbs for $30 on amazon.

Here’s the room setup:

Honestly, scouting auction sites should be it’s own separate “tips of the trade”.
Some of my better comeups:
$250,000 Viking Stick Poucher for so cheap I feel embarased listing the number.
A brand new California Air tools 4hp 60gallon compressor, still on skid and factory wrapped, 400$
Walk Behind Electric forklift for $350 (ended up not working but scrapped it and made about a VERY nice profit).
Branson 3 Compartment Ultrasonic Cleaning System for $11.
and so on.

Edit: I love how no one has asked about the hamburger on my wall.

Also, I no longer recommend the BBs (I mean, they work just fine) but I found a much better media for less money. Put it into it’s own comment below.

Beadbaths. They’re awesome for warming stuff up (distillate and whatnot) and better than water baths for providing consistent heat w/o moisture. But why oh why are the beads so damn expensive?!?!

basically $100/L, hell some venders charge more. That’s 5lbs of beads, for aluminum. Stupid expensive. Incorrect, see edit below

You know what’s WAY cheaper and even better (stainless steel)?
Stainless Steel Tumbling Media.
Folk use it to clean brass parts in a tumbler, but they’re smooth random stainless steel bits.
$44 for 5lbs (~3L, it’s a little less volume than the Lab Armor beads) Does need a quick clean on arrival but for the price you can’t beat it.

Edit: I appear to be incorrect. Lab armor states that their beads are 3.65lbs per Liter (but the shipping weight for a 4L container says 5lbs? must be a mistake). So Lab Armor beads come out to be $27.40 per lb. Tumbling Media is $8.99/lb. Still a much better price and for Stainless Steel! But yeah. Edited for correctness.

This is a great budget replacement!

Thank you sir!!!

And yes auction sites are such a dope trick of the trade for 80% of the stuff we get taxed on at retail.

Making our own is on our list of team building exercises…it’s a long list, with some pretty dumb ideas on it, but this particular one definitely has some promise.
