Travel to the US, R&D, D9/THCA

Hello everyone, and thank you for creating this forum!

I am planning to visit friends in the US for several weeks (they are not involved in the cannabis industry in any way, nor are they consumers or enthusiasts), and I would like to take advantage of this trip to do some cooking with extracts such as D9 distillate and THCA isolate.

From what I understand, D9 distillate can be added directly to food preparations (via a fatty substance), and THCA isolate can be converted into “oil/D9 distillate” via decarboxylate, and then added to preparations.

The idea is that I would like to buy 500ml of distillate and 500g of isolate locally (or order online and have it delivered) to do my own tests, but I have some questions about the legal aspects.

Being completely new to US laws and the different legislation between states (which, from what I’ve read, will change again in 2026), I’m asking for your help to enlighten me. The goal is to avoid ending up in jail

As a private individual, non-US resident, and non-professional cannabis/hemp user, am I at risk if I am caught with 500ml-1L of D9 distillate & the same amount of THCA isolate?

I plan to visit the following states: New York, North Carolina, Colorado, and California.
Which states are the most liberal, or where would I be least at risk for possessing these extracts?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but THCA isolate is legal in all states as long as it is derived from hemp and contains <0.3% D9?

Thx for your help

As a consumer without a license I don’t think you can have any amount of d9 on you legally.

This would be the wrong time of year to test that one, they are rapidly closing that loophole. As someone from out of country and as shitty as our administration has been lately…I wouldn’t roll the dice at all on that for your own safety. Can you find it? Probably. Will they make an example of you if something goes wrong? I would be more concerned about that question.

State laws are not uniform and it seems that even at the federal level they have a baby soft grip on what hemp/cannabis actually is. Simply put, there is no way to guarantee or even say ‘x is better than y’ to answer your question. However out of all of those you sure as fuck shouldn’t screw around in North Carolina.

If you buy it from a dispensary in California and don’t leave California with product you will be fine.

yeah, but you ain’t walking out the door with a 1/2 liter.

which by the way @ACL is approaching 500,000mg of active ingredient, which is 5000 100mg doses. How many elephants are you planing to knock out?

why do you need any more than 5grams for any given experiment?

I seldom use more than 0.5g when playing with this stuff at home. even then, if I’ve got folks in the 5-10mg range, I’ve got way more THC than I need for a party of 10.

0.5g == 500mg x 85% THC => 425mg.
Split 10 ways, that’s 42mg per participant.
and given differences in tolerance, I’ve got to communicate the dosing information effectively enough that the folks who WANT 100mg and the folks who would prefer 10mg or even 5mg, know how to achieve that.
