I had some crude thc made from cbd, ptsa and toluene
after distillation, there is a subtle smell of burnt cake
do you think it can be trace toluene? As sometimes terpenes still make it in the final distillate so why not toluene.

You can use heptane instead of toluene and this reaction will work fine.
burnt cake is a new one for me. Unless you’ve got a super pure reaction and distillation, there’s a lot of unknowns you could try to blame the smell on.

Sure, it could be. It could be a faint smell from any other number of unknowns that were potentially produced in the reaction and made it through distillation. It could be.
Tracé tolueen i doubt if any tolueen made it treu to the mains you basicly never took any heads from that run
Tolueen boiling point is 110C under hard vacuum -< 5000 microns the boiling point would have been reduced to 50-60C
It s entrained in the oil so that will let it evaporate less fast but with decent mixing in the flask at 110C most if not all should be out
By the time you reach 180C wich is. Where most start collecting cannabinoids non detectable levels could be present But I doubt that

I asume can be mistaken for side reaction products made or breakdown products made
Several recorcinols can be present and have a scent maybe one smells like tolueen but doubt it IS tolueen
