anyone try using something like this for DWC? I would imagine it wouldn’t work because there’s no air on the outside to air prune but figured I’d ask anyways. Our fucking root balls get so rootbound it’s crazy
Anything smaller than 3" and I clog pipes in RDWC. Current Culture suggested cutting the root ball, but anecdotally, I read it can lead to herms. Is it bro science? I dunno, but bigger root balls mean the ladies absorb more nutrients.
Hey, do you have a link for those non-tapered cages? Looks like a great setup
Back in the THC farmer days there was a guy doing R&D with DWC. He made it up to 50 gallon vats and was yielding 8 #'s per plant.
We worked up a pretty good system design so we don’t have clogging issues so much but the problem is the roots get so compacted that the insides don’t have access to the freshly oxygenated water, causing them to decompose.
We pulled 11lbs off a single 818 in a 5 gallon bucket once but it was ancient lol. Spent like 11 Weekes in veg and we kept just training it out wider. It looked fucking ridiculous, probably took up about 20 sqft. Moral of the story is: dwc plants don’t need that much root
Geez. I have problems in 13 gallon units if I let them veg for more than 3-4 weeks. I was talking to an agronomist last week. He said the secret to explosive root growth is access to micronutrients (Boron and molybdenum, IIRC) and VPD for the top of the plant.
Are you talking about doubleds up in Canada, he made those mpd buckets With the vert bulb setups and he would get no like that. Gotta appreciate the old forums sure did help a lot of us step our game up.
Super easy to clean to, just like the oxy pot i think it called was yrs ago.
I saw some people using this same material to make raised beds.
Thought it was pretty sweet.
Sorry, fortunately that is not my grow. Those cages look solid af though, would like those for outside!
You can make those cages yourself. Got to Home Depot, or Lowes and look for 6x6, or 5x5, or whatever size hole, 4’x8’ pieces. (Concrete Mesh) Use a pair of cutters and cut whatever size you want, bend around, and lock the cage with extra piece of wire, or something.
That’s how we use to make out own 200+ gallon pots for outside that and a lil landscapers cloth and done. Saves a ton of money
I have two steps where I do significant pruning to my canopies. I typically allow my plants to grow out nice and bushy during their vegetative period, minus some very brief cleanup up the birdnesting before transplant into their finishing pot and topping ofc. Right after I change the lights over to flower I do a first pass of pruning, open up the airflow throughout the canopy remove some lower branching and larger fan leaves in the center of the plants. Allows better light penetration into the canopy, better airflow to prevent mildew, and also makes it much easier to spray the plants if required.
After that, I allow a few more weeks to pass in the flowering period and once the plant finishes its stretching and vegetative regrowth I do a follow up pruning pass. This 2nd pass is not as dramatic but still focuses on branching that has been or will be shaded out by the rest of the canopy as well as anything criss-crossing or otherwise being disorganized; also some light defoliation of the largest leaves.
The plants handle it fine, in fact they seem to prefer it. That being said, it is possible to overdo it with the pruning and that will stress the shit out of your plants so just keep an even hand.
That site has the material in sheet I believe so you can do that. It is some pretty neat stuff.
@Concentrated_humbold , these are the cheaper version of those. The oxypots are nicer, but too much money. I got sick of those cloth pots and burning through em. These have paid for themselves pretty quickly.
Exactly who I was talking about.
You just taught me something very crucial that many people overlook. Robing the plant of it’s power plant.
Ive been using nursery bags for air pruning before transplant and they work great.
