Hi everyone,
I am looking for recommendations for laboratories in Europe and/or the United States that can perform a deep aromatic analysis of cannabis or hemp flower samples.
I am not looking for a basic cannabinoid COA or a standard 20–40 terpene panel. I am looking for something closer to a complete volatile aroma profile, ideally including:
Methods such as GC-MS, HS-SPME GC-MS, GCxGC, GCxGC-TOFMS or similar would be relevant.
The goal is to obtain a detailed aromatic fingerprint that could be useful for serious aroma research / reconstruction, not just compliance testing.
For the US side, I would also like to know if anyone has experience with sample logistics between states: whether labs can accept cannabis/hemp flower samples from out-of-state growers or breeders, whether this depends on hemp vs licensed cannabis material, and what kind of documentation is usually required.
If you know any labs, universities, private analytical companies, or specialized cannabis testing facilities that offer this kind of deep aroma profiling, I would really appreciate your recommendations.
Thanks in advance.

Perfume labs in France are the best for the task

Thanks Roguelab, always appreciated.
That direction makes sense. I had initially been looking mainly at cannabis / hemp testing labs, but I am starting to realize that for a true aroma fingerprint, fragrance / perfume analytical labs may actually be more relevant.
So far, I have found Altus in Austria, which offers a fairly broad cannabis terpene panel, around 92 terpenes / terpenoids. That seems useful as a first serious profile, but it may still be limited if the goal is a deeper aroma reconstruction.
What I am trying to understand now is where to go beyond that: esters, aldehydes, ketones, sulfur compounds / thiols and other VOCs that may be important for the real smell, not only the standard terpene skeleton.
Do you know any specific French perfume / fragrance labs or analytical services that could handle that type of work?
Ideally, I am looking for a lab that can provide a detailed volatile aroma profile by GC-MS / HS-SPME GC-MS / GCxGC or similar, with a report detailed enough to be useful for serious aroma research or reconstruction.
Also, do you know if those labs are usually open to working on cannabis/hemp flower samples, assuming the legal and documentation side is handled properly?
Thanks again. This is exactly the kind of direction I was hoping to clarify.

The Werc Shop at one time or another had some of the capabilities you’re looking for.

Thanks eyeworm, that is a very interesting lead.
I checked The Werc Shop quickly. From what I can see, they definitely seem relevant historically, since they started as a cannabis analytical lab and appear to have strong terpene / formulation expertise.
However, on their current website I mostly see flavor, formulation, white-label / consulting type services, and I do not clearly see a public analytical service where someone can submit a flower sample for deep aroma profiling.
Do you know if they still accept direct analytical work for cultivar aroma profiling, or if they mainly work through consulting / formulation projects now?
What caught my attention is that they mention expanded analytical methods and a broader scope beyond standard terpene testing, which sounds close to what I am looking for. I am just trying to clarify whether they would be a realistic lab option for deep volatile aroma analysis, or more of a formulation / terpene product company at this point.
Thanks again, this was a useful direction.
I’d love to see thiol/sulfur compound testing become part of the standard testing regime. I think we’re reaching a limit to the usefulness of the current understanding of cannabis flavor compounds

You’d have to reach out. I do know their analytical lab was quite sophisticated five years ago, or so. I could have swore they had a triple quad and maybe a TOF?
Thanks, that makes sense.
I’ll reach out to them directly and check whether they still offer external analytical work for deep cannabis/hemp volatile aroma profiling, especially beyond standard terpene panels and including sulfur/thiol-related compounds if possible.
If I get a clear answer from them, I’ll come back here and confirm whether they are still a realistic option for this kind of analysis. It may be useful for others looking into the same issue.
It sounds like you’re more interested in characterization than super accurate quantification
Maintaining these specialized methods for accurate and precise quant is very costly for labs doing everything the proper way. And unfortunately it is often not financially viable with only a limited number of customers who would pay.
Give me a realistic budget and I’ll set up any GC system you want. You have way more flexibility to do this in house as you can define how rugged your data quality system needs to be. I’d recommend exploring a simple gcms single quad at first , as they are fairly simple to learn and maintain, plus cheaper to keep operating.
Thanks, that makes sense.
At this stage we are not looking to buy or set up GC equipment in-house. We are still in an early project phase and our immediate need is to find an external lab or service provider able to perform broad aroma/VOC characterization on cannabis/hemp samples.
But I appreciate the offer and the clarification. If one day we move toward an in-house analytical setup, I’ll definitely keep your suggestion in mind.
For now, the useful takeaway for us is that “characterization” may be a better word than “high-precision quantification” for what we are trying to achieve.
