I was witness to a failed atlas column, 30lb with nitrogen push , the kid was on a ladder when the top blew off . the whole stand fell over breaking the nitrogen fitting off and imbedded itself half way through the rack stand. I was upstairs at the time in the distillation lab. The whole place could have blown , dudes lucky to be alive, just had a bubbling crude face mask. This happened at Ioudnclears facility in santacruz back in the day while on a consultation . Rip delbert , vic , synergy .

My eyes finally crossed reading comments, and most of what I have to say already has been, but here is the short of it as I see it.
May we ASSume pressure requirements that we must meet are as dictated by ASME Section VIII as 350 psi 6ā and under and 3X maximum pressure for above 6ā pressure vessels when using LPG??.
The nuts on a 13-MPH tri clamp should be Silicon Bronze, not brass.
Of note is that the 13-MHP high pressure clamp with the silicon bronze nut only meets ASME requirements for our operation up to 4ā. Above that you need an SSH or an ASME clamp.
Si Bronze is used primarily because it is corrosion resistant, self lubricating, and doesnāt gall will stainless bolts, but secondarily because it has relatively high tensile strength at 108Ksi compared to 316SS bolts at 79.8Ksi:

The issue lies with how threaded systems work, and that is through slight stretch.
The modulus of elasticity of si bronze is only 15.2Ksi compared to 316SS at 28Ksi, so it deflects less before reaching ultimate yield strength and starting to stretch.
Yield is only around 60.2Ksi, and each time you tighten it, you slightly stretch it. When you remove the nut it doesnāt return to its previous condition, but stretches again next use, until Si Bronzeās elongation before ultimate tensile is reached, which is only about 13%, compared to 316SSās 60%.
One straightforward solution is to properly torque the nuts, so as to not stretch them more than necessary and replace them regularly.
Over torquing tri-clamps can distort them and the flanges so that it takes more pressure to seal.
If it doesnāt seal at proper torque, check your gaskets and gasket surfaces. Gaskets require regular replacement as well, especially hard ones like PTFE.
You can also use 410SS or a Grade 8 socket head cap screws and Grade G nuts such as they do in the ASME clamp. You will still need to periodically replace them, just not as often.

Im gonna replace my bolts and nuts with standard grade 5. My machine isnt in a corrosive environment or if it is ill notice the bolts rusty before they fail. and now im scared of the brass shit. The only failure ive had was actually the threads on the stainless bolt and not the nut. The whole stainless thing is for sanitary reasons but the damn bolt is on the outside.

Solution number four that works. The fish trap exists only because of the fish.
Sanitary requirements include cleaning in place with aggressive cleaners, but as long as they arenāt corroded the issue is moot.
Keeping in mind what ever fastener we use that the clamp can also be permanently distorted and what the different clamps are rated for at the diameter we are usingā¦

that too, some of my 3 inch clamps seem to pull teh bolts further down the threads, the clamps almost touch. i should dump those.

Caught this 3ā clamp just a couple of days agoā¦before it made it (back) into service.
Not sure it this is a casting flaw or happened during normal (ab)use
Guessing itās a combination of those two.
Check your nuts.
Check your bolts.
Check your clamps.
Check your gaskets.
Check your flanges.
Regularly!

Aa soon as I have nuts start to shed flakes from the threads. I discard it and grab a new one.
Anyone ever see that video of the smokey point production bizzybee rack that, fucking literally, flew across the room. Barely scraping the operators ass. And he hasnāt made a drop of oil since. That video alone made me check my nuts and bolts regularly. The ones I never get to remove are the scetch ones

I had one leaking mid run, went to give it a snug and it popped. Started to leak a bunch more. I removed pressure from the machine and tried to figure out how to get it to stop. My guy helping suggested to double nut the bolt and it worked, fortunately.
Then when I asked for new clamps and gaskets. It took several weeks for them to pay the invoice. All while all of my clamps and gaskets were needing to be replaced
I donāt. I was shown the video by one of their guys at bizcon last year. Itās pretty fuckin epic, though. A quad rack with 4 columns on it fuckin launches with 150+ psi from the bottom clamp of one of them. They didnāt change out the filter at the bottom of the material column regularly and one of nuts gave out under normal operation.
