Terps terpenes what’s the difference?

:yum::scientist:Terpenes: What Sets Them Apart? Hemp Terpenes, Smokable CBD, and Traditional Cannabis Terpenes:test_tube:

Have you ever wondered about the differences between terpenes derived from hemp, smokable CBD flower, and traditional cannabis? Let’s dive into the fascinating world of terpenes and explore what makes each of them unique.

Hemp Terpenes: A Rare Find

Hemp terpenes, extracted from industrial hemp, aren’t as commonly encountered. Industrial hemp has traditionally been grown for food and fiber, not for producing exotic, delicious, and aromatic flavors. Therefore, the terpenes obtained from this source might not offer the exciting sensory experience associated with other types.

The Emergence of Smokable Hemp Flower

Until 2014, smokable hemp flower was virtually unheard of, until the passage of the Farm Bill. This groundbreaking legislation opened the door for breeders like us in Humboldt. We had been crafting CBD-dominant strains since the early 2000s to cater to medical clients who sought the therapeutic benefits of cannabis without the intense high. These clients were after something special – delicious, tasty flower with properties like relaxation, pain relief, and relief from nausea.

One of the early strains we introduced from our nursery in Arcata was THC (Thai Haze Cambodian). This beauty was not only fragrant but also incredibly flavorful. Its terpenes were reminiscent of exotic tropical fruits, making it a delightful experience. Surprisingly, it contained almost no THC but was remarkably high in terpenes, CBD, CBC, and other minor cannabinoids. It was the smoothest smoke one could imagine, without the typical “stoned” feeling.

These strains quickly gained popularity among our medical clients, leading us to focus on inbreeding and selecting strains with low THC content and exceptional terpene profiles.

Pioneering the Smokable Hemp Industry (2014-2018)

Between 2014 and 2018, we embarked on a pioneering journey, selling cannabis strains that aligned with the Farm Bill’s description of smokable hemp. In 2018, the federal government essentially gave us the green light to continue our business of selling cannabis as smokable hemp flower.

From 2014 onwards, we dedicated ourselves to research and development in cannabis breeding. We crossed traditional, well-known cannabis strains to create what we now call smokable hemp flower.

Unveiling the Incredible Hulk

One of the first CBD hemp strains from which we extracted terpenes was the “Incredible Hulk.” This strain, a result of inbreeding and crossing two renowned cannabis strains, Jack Herer and Green Crack, achieved compliance with CBD smokable “Hemp” standards. The “Incredible Hulk” became the first multi-hundred-acre certified organic USDA Smokable Flower with “Hemp” terpenes, setting new standards in the industry. It received widespread recognition, with many successful terpene companies using it as a foundational component in their brands.

Blurring the Lines: Traditional Cannabis vs. CBD Smokable Flower

So, what distinguishes the genetics of traditional cannabis from CBD smokable flower? Hemp and marijuana are both types of cannabis, but not all marijuana qualifies as hemp.

We currently extract our terpenes from both traditional cannabis and strains considered CBD smokable flower, which essentially translates to compliant cannabis.

By tracing the genetic lineage of our terpene cultivars, we’ve built a vast library of strains. For example, if we trace the “Incredible Hulk” cultivar to its parents, we find Green Crack and Jack Herer, and even further down the family tree, Northern Lights #5, Shiva Skunk x Skunk #1, Fisherman’s Indica, and so on.

We also employ various techniques, such as manipulating temperatures and vacuum pressure, to separate specific terpene fractions. By analyzing terpene profiles and combining them to match hybrids, we are in the process of recreating traditional cannabis flavors.

Hybrids and Exotic Terpenes

Currently, we are crafting hybrids with 100% traditional cannabis and exotic CBD smokable flower-derived terpenes using these innovative methods and techniques.
