Hey everybody, I got some residual alcohol results today that are above the limit of detection and below the limit of quantification. (20-140 ppm)
Does anybody have human taste/smell data for isopropyl and ethanol? I found as low as 22 ppm for smell and nothing for taste.
Thanks
Maybe it’s irresponsible to ask people to taste it for science. I can’t smell or taste any, just don’t want anybody else to say they can.
published and peer reviewed…which means they had to get permission to use human subjects.
it may well be irresponsible to ask folks to huff what you’ve made, but sniffing it for residual solvent seems to be legit
sniffing out ripe fruit has been important for longer than we’ve been walking this earth.
the fact that many can detect alcohols down in the ppb range is consistent with picking up the alcohol dehydrogenase gene some 10 million years ago (we started walking upright ~2 mya).
The emergence of an efficient alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme (ADH4), and the consequent ability to efficiently metabolize alcohol (ethyl alcohol or ethanol), arose approximately 10 million years ago, during the middle Miocene climatic transition, when forest ecosystems of East Africa were increasingly replaced by grasslands [117]. This evolutionary adaptation to alcohol may have enabled our early hominid ancestors to survive away from the forest canopy, and to thrive on fermented terrestrial food sources [117]. ref: ADH4 - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics
Less taste and smell, more regulatory guidance:
Just get it tested and go within legal cannabis state guidelines for ppm thresholds. Fuck what people can smell or taste if it passes lab tests it’s good to go in my pov.
Except you have unhappy customers, doesnt matter if the test looks right
No guidelines for the state of NC, I passed the full Florida compliance panel with flying colors. They say 5,000 ppm isopropyl is good to go for finished product. We’re under 140, I’m hoping that’s low enough to be undetectable for anyone using it.
That’s right in the odor threshold. Unfortunately IPA is a little lower than ethanol. But if you have any terps left at all you should be fine.
