So I’ve been doing the cold and fast runs when I do hydrocarbon extraction. I took off my bottom sight glass as per advise from… omg I forget… Someone kept telling me to take off the bottom sight glass so I did. I have a sight glass at the top of my cls so that I can see the liquid start to flow through or Just in case there’s no flow I can tell. I’ve pressure tested it to 80 before. So I think it’s fine considering I don’t go above 40psi.
ANYWAYS!!! now I wanna start soaking because I’m going to start dewaxing and I wanna know if this is safe to use before the shut off so I can see what’s going on inside the column
If it’s gonna be holding butane around it (not being on top but on bottom or whatnot where’s cold solvent hits it, I would recommend utilizing Meta Glas. I didn’t spend the extra cause mine are on top and not touching solvent. But if any solvent hits that, I would spend the extra. I haven’t ever had one of those sight glasses break on me personally, (I have the same exact ones you linked on the tops of mine) but definitely would recommend using MetaGlas for bottom flow indicators.

OPERATING TEMPERATURE
LAMINATED SAFETY GLASS (LSG)
LSG consists of two or more glass plates which are firmly connected by highly elastic interlayers (polyvinyl butyral).
The working temperature is determined by the interlayer und lies between -60°C and +80°C. "
So how would I go about ordering from Metaglas? Should I go straight through them, or should I go through @Killa12345 and have him cobble together an order?
Borosilicate Tri-Clamp Sight Glasses For Extractor Lids
***Note:(Only comes with 1 sight glass.)
4 piece borosilicate sight glasses offer a greater chemical resistance, viewing area, and cleanability compared to a traditional sight glass such as polycarbonate or Metaglas sight glasses. These Tri-Clamp sight glasses consist of 3 pieces: the borosilicate glass disc, Viton gasket, and custom tri-clamp ferrule. When used in combination with high-pressure clamps the working PSI is rated at 800 ( pending 3rd party peer review ).
i personally wouldnt use any sight glass other than metaglass unless the solvent is not staying on the glass…if its a pass thru…you can certainly get away with it… but if you having solvent at constant contact for any period of time where the gas has no place to go…then meta glass…
If one or both sides of the glass are open and the solvent touching is temp and just on the way to another chameber…it should be fine as the gas can expand in other places…
I have some 2” ones kicking around. They aren’t the newest and prolly have some scratches on the glass, but I could sell them for cheap if you wanted. How many you need @GroovyOctopusLabs?
