Separation Anxiety (mechanical)

Do you make the filter inserts too? Where did you source those?

He does:

I utterly destroyed the chemtek screens so I designed and machined these inserts which work like a champ.

They are aluminum. I designed and made them as I have a machine shop as well. I can offer similar parts if anyone is interested. Of course, being custom work it’s not too inexpensive though.

I found a j2-21 refrigerated centrifuge at a local supply store, but I was unsure if that model heated as well. Are there two versions of that centrifuge?

Nope, just that version. You don’t need a heater because centrifugation generates heat. @Thermodynamic wrote the JA-10 rotor will reach a temperature of 140’F at 10,000 RPM.

However, you may want to find a newer model than the J2-21 because it has exceeded its equipment lifecycle. That means finding parts if it breaks could be difficult. The J2-MH is the next oldest model by production age, but it’s already near the end of its equipment lifecycle. So, while you’ll save money on the J2-MH, it may exceed its lifecycle while still in use at your lab. The J2-MI followed the J2-MH and has some years left before the end of its lifecycle.

Don’t forget the JA-10 rotor; if the centrifuge you found includes the rotor, that’s great. Because that’s the most expensive part when buying the used models from the quotes I have recived.

Thank you, @Thermodynamic; I’m incredibly pleased to have connected with you.

LOL, he says without even liking my post

And for the record, yes! A handi at 10,000 RPM will blow more than your mind

P.S. DON’T Google ā€œfast handjob gifā€ in the hopes of finding a funny gif to post :grimacing:

Made them. It looks like I will be selling a couple of sets so if anyone else wants in on the production run, now is the time to message me.

I tried to slide into those dms a while ago and never heard back still interested though

I would just like to reiterate these words of wisdom. sometimes too old is just too old…

I’ve got two beckman that both died of old age. the control electronics on both was failing at the component level by the time we got to playing with them.

it’s really no fun to get one working then have another unobtainable or unidentifiable component go out, especially when the OEM laughs at the request for a fine manual or replacement parts.

Ive got a Sorval we picked up for free than I might get to playing with shortly…hoping it’s (even older) electronics are more robust than the beckmans.
