Separating Glass Pieces and Rotavap Water Goo

Hey Team,

This piece of glass has been super difficult for me to break apart and clean. I have tried heating the glass pretty hot and then trying carefully to separate them. I can’t get the KF25 piece out or the piece part that connects the upper and lower pieces through that red plastic piece? Does anyone have any techniques they could recommend or something I can soak it in? Due to the cost of this specific piece I’m really not trying to muscle it.

Also a side question for you guys that have rotavaps- I use distilled water like directed for my rotavap and I am noticing this translucent goo that is living in the water. My thoughts are its either ethanol coagulating in the water or some sort of bacteria? Has anyone experienced anything like that?

TIA

When’s the last time you drained and changed the water? That should be a given for your machine maintenance done daily if not weekly to allow for cleanest possible water source for your bath. Letting water sit overtime will surely be a bath for microbial growth and particulate to settle into.

As for the pieces of glass and kf flange if heat ain’t allowing for it to come apart as the glass heats it may just be less time consuming and more worth while to grab a new adapter as you could possibly create micro cracks by the joints. If proceeding with trying to heat and pull apart just be cautious of thermal shock and what you’re using to pull/hold with if not by hand.
