Puffco mods, repairs, and replacement parts

So, I’ve been playing around with a couple busted peak pros, both of which seem to have battery issues. Taking them apart, I see that they are powered by a 2s2p cell, 4x 3.7v 850mah cells connected to an internal BMS to make a 7.4v/1700mah cell. There is also a 10k thermistor to monitor battery temps, which is soldered to the mainboard and taped in to the cells.

I’ve been looking for a direct replacement battery, but I can’t find much that doesn’t have external battery management leads. I did try a 7.4v 2s 18650 pack, but the cells seem to be pretty low quality and lost 20% of charge/had a lot of Vdrop without successfully heating a 3d chamber. I suspect better cells like sony VTC6 could work, but I still have to figure out an internal BMS solution to get better cells to work. I may try and salvage the parts from the cheap 18650 cells and see if I can get it to work with sony ones, but I don’t have the tools to spot weld and it seems like more trouble than it might be worth.

stock cell

Stock battery with wrap removed

attempted repair/mod with 18650s

anyone know anything about fixing these that would care to loop me in? I’ve seen that there’s a shop called Higher Ground in Houston that does mods and repairs, but I’d love to just be able to get the battery repairs figured out

I’ve also seen this mod on reddit/facebook, but I think they’re leaving the stock battery in and soldering the battery pack/buck converter connection to the bottom of the PCB which seems dangerous without removing the stock pack

Kyle Wym is usually pretty responsive. May want to hit him up in the interim as he’s not offering the service at the moment, but could probably offer some of his experience/input.

Might be able to rebuild the pack with four fresh lipo cells, keeping the bms from the old pack. Wrap it with some kapton tape after you solder and shrink wrap your leads, and stick the thermistor in the pack.

Found some cheap cells to play with on ebay:

I considered trying that, I did salvage the one that was spot welded. I’m curious if any of our Chinese vape members might be able to source a direct replacement though lol

they are not too expensive and a handy skill to have. Practice a bit to get the hang of it, watch your eyes. I got about as far as you did on the mod process before getting a Dabx. I’m looking at divine tribe v5 now.

As for the battery mod, you may notice a series of pcb boards hidden on the battery pack. Carefully remove the heat tape cover. You’ll have to de-solder the battery connections from the pcb. Buy some lead-free solder and a high temp, fine tip solder kit. Spot weld batteries into series get some good wire and solder battery pcb to new battery pack. Might as well get bigger batteries… like 21700 or something. Dont cheap out on the batteries- that’s literally the most important part! DM me for more details.

Your safety concerns are definitely valid. Do this in a garage, shop, and somewhere where you can safely dispose of a battery. First sign is swelling and ammonia smell.

I love that I can just bring spare 18350 batteries for my DabX!

When I replaced the batteries in mine after it stopped charging, I found they were very low quality lipos, usually the ones found in disposable vapes.

The replacements I used was 4 18350’s, I did have to dremel the case a bit to make it fit, but it was pretty easy. A spot welder is recommended, and I would not suggest doing it without one.

The Dabx was best for a while. I love the chug…. but recently I feel like their heaters went to shit. They constantly break! I go through 1 every 2 months(when its my daily driver). I am also not a fan of the reclaim taste carry-over and long cleaning requirements. I ended up cycling through 6 heaters just to preserve flavor.

The 3d heaters on ceramic bowls are better for flavor preservation and easier to clean. The puffco heaters have very poor durability/ break too easily and cost too much- hence the decision to go to Divine Tribe V5. Also has replaceable batteries/multiple mods that can be used -albeit requiring more technical/electrical knowledge.
