i was decarbing ethanol/heptane extraction in the roto
and was left with some very long crystals
not sure what it is
i doubt its thca

Maybe CBD?
hmmm
possibly cbd
it’s from fresh frozen flower
Could be CBDA if you were early in the decarb process…otherwise, CBD is likely. Was it a cryo ethanol extraction with minimal residence time? Are you familiar with the Beam test? You can do a quick indicative check to see if the crystals are CBD/CBDA with the Beam test.
If that doesn’t work I’ll send over my procedure for the Bong test.
congrats, you made meth.
haha totally kidding.
I get something that looks like those when using a countertop water distiller to recover etho.
no i’m not familiar with the beam test

The needed reagents are:
5% KOH(Potassium hydroxide) in 95% ethanol
(5g KOH in 100 ml ethanol)
Take 1 ml of the extract and dry on a white porcelain dish like an egg cup, saucer, or similar. (Gently heat the dish to evaporate the liquid phase of the extract). You will have a dish with remnants of resin leftover once the liquid has evaporated.
Place 5 drops of your 5% KOH in ethanol solution on your plate, and wait about 10 minutes. You will see a distinct violet/purple/pink color from samples containing CBD
This is another way
Utilizing 91% iso, 50%iso, carbon, and I believe koh.
Iirc it was @beaker who gave me the sop a few yrs back.
maybe i should just it out for testing
The above took me 30 mins tops and supplies were under 10.00 to do 50+ tests.
I’m going to have to try it out. I think I have everything.
1.5 ml micro centrifuge vial (snap top)
0.08 gram lye
Tiny roach sized “pinch” of plant material.
1ml of 50% iso rubbing alcohol (although 70% can be used)
1 tiny Carbon pellet (sold at pet stores in fish dept)
Do the following in this exact order.
Add 0.08 grams of lye to vial, add plant material, add carbon pellet (on top of plant material to get better visability of color change), add rubbing alcohol as close to top of vial as possible (about 1ml). Close vial securely and shake for 60 seconds (making sure lye is not stuck to bottom…give few light taps if lye is stuck), wait 10 minutes and shake another 60 seconds, after 10 more minutes the color reaction should be ready.
Green = 0%
Yellow = 0-3%
Orange = 3-5%
Maroon with slight purple = 5-8%
Light purple = 8-12%
LYE safety should be researched and understood before trying the testing.
DO NOT add over 0.08 gram lye as the more you add then the hotter the chemical reaction will be and you can get burned, 0.08 is the most sensitive amount for percent testing (under 0.08 and you may not get any color reaction)…I burned my finger when I tried 1.5 gram of lye.
You should try to use dense samples over fluffy samples (fluffy samples do not react as good).
You should perform the test 3 times to each plant…using the highest percent as final result. Taking a pinch from different buds or different areas of a bud.
Wash hands often and make sure to wash work area after, cover work area in paper towels or paper in order to better clean up after.
Purple Nitrile gloves are better suited than latex gloves when dealing with lye.
As extra pre caution you can wrap toilet paper or something around the vial during the shaking process.
Drain cleaners can not be used instead of actual lye (drain cleaners add dye to the lye).
Use a glass dram vs a snap top plastic vial. No spillage at all.
Edit
Also for accuracy, each element (mj/cbd, carbon, lye) must be weighed out. Not just guessed and tossing in the solution.
I just tossed everything in, just to see if it would work with 91% iso, and my 10+ year old lye that is one big clump. I used a small ACDC bud, my highest CBD strain.
I will keep track of everything better next time I do this with a few different high CBD strains, and one without any cbd.
I think I am going to try to make some of those long crystals again too.
Im using:
0.25 g KOH
0.1 g plant material (flower)
0.1 g carbon
2 ml 91% isopropyl alcohol
interesting color range from my first 5 tests
It turns out the KOH I was using is actually NaOH. Whoops.
Does CBDA react to beams test?
Shouldn’t really matter. I just stopped by hardware store and used naoh, for a preliminary test and thc (thca I should say) did not react while both cbd and cbg did to form their quinone analogues
