My opinion on Paul Gilbert is he should’ve declined the offer to join Mr. Big because then he would’ve been able to do more heavy thrash metal with the OG members of RacerX. Paul Gilbert gave up the reputation of a thrash metal guitarist to be with what was essentially a boy band [Mr. Big] that should’ve just recruited Ritchie Kotzen from the start.
Paul Gilbert is one of the greatest guitarists on the planet but I feel like his range was wasted with Mr. Big, though I think him networking through Billy Sheehan helped his career but not much.
His arpeggio and sweep picking skills with absolute precision and rhythm as well as the amount of notes per min he can hit is just absurd. He might have autism because he has a lot of arpeggios and riffs he recycles.
I’m not shitting on Paul Gilbert but fwiw I really do wonder how it would’ve been if he had stuck with thrash and speed metal. I know he went back to RacerX but he should’ve just stayed and then done collaborations with Billy Sheehan.

They had some great songs that were less generic but it was mostly Kotzen on the cd’s anyways. Paul was only there for like two albums and did most the live stuff for appearances.
Didn’t kotzen fuck one of their wives and that’s why they didn’t get any bigger? The man is an amazing guitarist but it seems like they need to schedule an extra big rig on tour to carry his ego, haha
