Has anyone had any luck chilling down their system using a plate heat exchanger with LN2 in a similar fashion to a counterflow coil?? I was thinking inject the LN2 in and run methyl hydrate thru it?? (I am currently using methyl hydrate in the jackets of my CLS.)

Methanol freezes at liq N2 temps…which I have always assumed would be a disadvantage in a flare plate HX

Wouldn’t you just use less nitrogen to keep the temps a little higher?

Yes, you can throttle the liquid flow so it doesn’t cool as much.

what are ppl running thru their counterflow coils with LN2?

Is there a way to tell when to stop throttling?

I use a swagelock needle valve on mine. I use it to cool the jacket of my solvent tank, instead of using dry ice. I use less than the cost of dry ice. It’s for butane and not on a plate heatX, but the concept works the same. I could outfit a thermoprobe in there and monitor the temps and regulate flow that way.

That’s similar to what I want to do. But I want to chill my material columns as well. Also running butane. Is it cheaper because of cost or because of how much you use?? I’m using 100# of dry ice a day @ $2/lb so I’m hoping to cut that cost a bit.

How do you pump your LN2? Prax air here claims to buy Ln2 you have to get a dewar i think it was and it just pours out???

I use a dewar, yes and it has a hose that is fed to whatever you are cooling. Just get an adapter for the hose to attach to your equipment . I get a 220L with delivery, fees, tax and the works for around 130-150 ish. I use a couple or few a week and it’s still cheaper than a couple totes of dry ice. If I had a micro bulk it would be cheaper. It would work for your material column, but I would find a way to get a temperature reading. Ln2 will get colder than we are wanting.

Where would be the best placement for a sensor?? Are there sensors designed for the industry?

There are a few ways to get the temperature reading. I have a data logger on my equipment that came with the bizzybee. I can’t remember where to find it. Once I get to the shop I’ll look it up and post it.

There’s some companies that have temp guages that you can use in line like a pressure Guage, too. I can’t remember who has em right now, but I’ve seen them.

Would be super Interested in the pressure gauge you recommend. Currently using way more ice than I would like to admit. Just starting to fiddle with LN to drop some of that cost. Figured I would start with solvent tanks and go from there.

Assuming you’re actually interested in the THERMOMETER
