@onedabbitch @Millennialstoner and I are shooting for Charlotte somewhat soon. The venue had fallen through due to moving locations but we would love to get something going there. Easy airport in and out and not terribly far from a lot of us

Anyone here applying in the upcoming KY medical license round? Not sure what direction I’d like to go yet (consulting, partnering, starting my own effort) but happy to bounce ideas with anyone looking at the state. Even though I went 3/3 in Alabama that process’ insanity taught me to carefully consider which state to next focus on…

So, who put in applications for Kentucky? To no surprise the state seems to be overwhelmed with the number of applications received.

I saw and heard about a number of consultants messing up applications/real estate/etc for clients, from firms that are usually top notch. It feels like the turnover’s been so high in that part of the industry that there’s hardly anyone left who’s dependable. Not shilling for my own biz, it’s genuinely annoying and pretty sad to see people desperately needing someone to redo their entire set of apps at the 11th hour (which can’t really be done) after they’ve paid $100K+ to a complete clown.

But overall best of luck to everyone! I hope a few local groups get licenses; without even mentioning hemp Kentucky has always been a state with great local operators.

I’m seriously kicking myself for not pushing harder to put in applications for testing facilities. 5 total applications for the whole state? That’s crazy

They will likely allow a later application for testing labs, come 2025, once they see if the current pool can actually operate.

Testing labs require a lot more capital investment than a lot of people expect, depending on the states testing requirements.
There will likely only need to be 2-3 labs for KY, once it reaches maturity. Some will go out of business within first 1-3 years as the volume of testing will be less than they expect. Only 26 licenses that need testing in that state, with the current ordinances.

@SISU who in their right mind would pay $100k fee for a application development cost?!

I/we have never charged anyone more than $10-$40k for development fees for even multiple/vertical applications.
And that includes stamped floorplans, financials/capital summaries, operating plans, etc…

KY market had significantly larger appeal to business minded operators.

Limited licenses means there will always be a product demand (I forsee manufacturers struggling within the first year), only 16 cultivation licenses in total for the state. Roughly 120,000sqft canopy.

If the state enforces a COD/30 day invoice/AP limit requirement for retailers to pay their vendors (something I see being implemented soon, like NY State), it could be a good market.

Im baffled with the retail application numbers though.
In ratio to state population, here were nearly 8 times as many retail store applications for KY medical market, than the NY recreational market received over the past 3 years. (Per population ratio)

Almost 5000 total retail applications for a state which will have 100,000-200,000 valid medical card holders by end of 2025. They are only issuing 48 in the lottery. Thats about 100 applications per store slot, for the lottery.

The application for KY was manageable.

We have aided for almost all US states now for applications, and KY seemed to have one of the most straight forward and easy processes to complete the application forms.

If you are an experienced operator, you would have had 0 correction notices this past week.
I also am hearing people got notices for their floorplans/real estate not being correctly displayed.

I wonder how many of these applications will be dropped off by not meeting the remedy/correction periods.

I saw a lot of people charging $5-10k per app, not including drawings + real estate. This was a lottery, but generally the going rate for merit based apps for very limited license states (<15 licenses) is $150-300k now which is crazy given the diminishing performance of the firms charging that like I mentioned.

The numbers aren’t too surprising (Connecticut got 37,000 apps for 58 dispensary licenses, albeit the fee was much cheaper), but I don’t get going all-in on KY. For some reason people seem to think the state won’t issue any additional licenses for 3+ years - IMO the state will 100% run a new round of applications next year.

The real estate was also interesting… I think many of people will be out of compliance with that for various reasons.

I applied for a processor license. Not thrilled about the odds, but worth a shot

We would like to share that Governor Beshear just announced KCA Labs as the first recipient of a Kentucky Medical Cannabis Program license as Safety Compliance Facility # TEST0001.

Thanks for your support over the years. We’re looking forward to working with other license recipients.

A lot of times new medical programs are delayed because the testing licensees can’t get operational in time; that won’t be a problem in KY! Congrats guys and hope to work with you.

Thank you. We hope to work with you, too. Looks like the lottery is being held October 28th.
